TIO PEPE 2020 RELEASE
En Rama Gonzalez Byass
Grapes | Palomino |
Origin | Spain, Sherry |
ABV | 15% |
As ever, only the very finest casks of Tio Pepe are selected to be bottled 'en rama' each year and in 2020 the cellar master, Antonio Flores, found 69 barrels that were worthy out of the Bodega's 21,000! So the quantities are limited but the results are astonishing. En rama is the purest and freshest expression of Fino sherry you can find. This was bottled on the 23rd & 24th of April so really is hot off the press. It lasts well, in fact last year we tasted bottles from the last 10 annual releases to celebrate 10 years of En Rama and they were fascinating. However, it is just so good when enjoyed as soon as it lands - for that 'in bodega' experience. Mid-yellow colour with some pale green and golden inflections. This is powerfully aromatic with a distinctive yeasty 'flor' character. Intense and savoury, but not over-bearing. There is a delicious mineral, saline tang that peps up the mid-palate. Complex and layered, there is so much to taste yet it all draws together so well with a clean, citrusy finish. Drink this chilled in the sunshine with the classics: salted almonds, olives or seafood. Quite simply this is Jerez - bottled.

En rama is the new kid on the block as regards to sherry. Basically, by sampling an en rama (or “raw”) sherry, you’re tasting fresh, unfiltered and unclarified wine straight from the barrel. Bottled every April when the flor is at its best, it’s the Jerez equivalent of an untouched or natural wine. Young and exuberant, this 2020 fino release bursts with orange and citrus flavours along with that salty tang and notes of nuts and lychees. Don’t put this wine away in the cupboard and forget about it. It’s a sherry to be enjoyed while it’s still young and ebullient.John Clarke - The Independent (Dec 2020)
Gonzalez Byass
In 1835, a young man called Manuel María González Angel arrived in Jerez, intent on making a name for himself in the thriving and lucrative sherry business. Encouraged by the consistent growth in exports, that same year he purchased a small winery and began to produce and export his own wines. This was the start of Bodegas Tío Pepe which, due to the firm’s increasing success, became the González Byass company soon afterwards. Today, Bodegas Tío Pepe is known around the world as one of the leading producers of sherry and Brandy de Jerez.
