In 2009 one group of like-minded ‘grower-Champagne’ producers (‘Terre et Vins de Champagne’) got together to put on a tasting which focused to a large degree on the vins clairs (the still wines) from the 2008 vintage, before they were bottled for the prise de mousse (the second fermentation in bottle which produces the bubbles). It was a great success and spawned a number of copycat groups and tastings, so much so that there are now around 30 different tastings, the vast majority in Reims, held over the second weekend in April and the middle of the following week.
These tastings are a great opportunity for wine professionals to taste the huge range of Champagnes available from these growers, and while some of the tastings do still show the ‘vins clairs‘, the focus for the buyers is probably much more on the new Champagne releases being shown.
Now you can get a taste of this annual celebration of the new releases at our London tasting, at which we will be joined by many of the growers we represent. If you can’t make it to the tasting or are interested to explore the fascinating diversity and all-round deliciousness of these wines, follow the button links below to find out more about each of these growers or browse the tasting’s wine list. Champagne’s ‘summer season’ is nearly upon us, why not really enjoy it this year?
