Back when few people’s Italian wine selections ventured south of Tuscany, the one southern name people did know was Salice Salentino from Puglia. Even then, it was largely famed for its strength and punch.

Nowadays, Puglia is a land of supple seductive wines benefiting from improved investment in wineries and vineyards and reaping the benefit with sales.

Negroamaro, the variety behind Salice Salentino, is perhaps the best-known grape variety although Primitivo (popular since the discovery of its links with Zinfandel) and the local Uva di Troia make very good wines too.
