Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello di Montalcino is one of the great names of Italian wine, something recognised when it was the first wine to be granted the elevated Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) status in 1980. The vineyards are centred on the hill-top Tuscan town of Montalcino, a little way to the south of the Chianti Classico. The wine must be 100% Sangiovese, from a particular clone specific to Montalcino.

Brunello is only released for sale after extended ageing - Riservas must be six years old, non-Riservas five years old, and all Brunello must have spent at least two years in wood. Wood ageing varies from traditional large botti to smaller Bordelais barriques according to the whim of the winemaker.

Rosso di Montalcino is the more immediate, younger drinking wine of the region – still 100% Sangiovese. Whilst without the majesty and longevity of Brunello, Rosso di Montalcino should not be over-looked in the search for great Tuscan wine.
