Also undergoing a little renaissance of its own is the Pinotage, a grape variety bred in South Africa (it’s a crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut) that hasn’t been taken up elsewhere in the world, making it iconically South African. Useful for making bright, fruity, simple red wines Pinotage was sometimes marred by a character of burnt rubber. But recent improvements in viticulture and vinification techniques have worked wonders and, whilst Pinotage may never find its way to the world’s finest wine racks, it does make some rather pleasant wines.
