Pierre Taittinger was from a family of wine merchants. He first visited Champagne while fighting in World War I. Having been injured in combat he was transferred to the 18th-century Château de la Marquetterie, a major French command post south of Épernay. The young Taittinger was so impressed by the beauty and history of the place that he vowed to buy it if the opportunity ever arose. He got his chance in the 1930’s and the Taittinger Champagne house was born. Today the family have large vineyard holdings which allows them great control over the fruit ensuring the consistently excellent quality.
