This morning – where France is not on holiday – the 2014 releases continue. The big one is Château Talbot 2014 (£290). We liked the wine, although the balance of all notes suggests a wine that maybe quite a firm style.

We’ve just 2 cases left of this lovely wine from one of the top wine producers of the Côte de Beaune. If you are perhaps new to Burgundy wines this is a great opportunity to taste fine, if not overly complex red Burgundy for a reasonable price. This is delicious drinking – made from old vine Sauvignon Blanc (70%) and Sémillon (30%). A beautifully crafted white Bordeaux which will appeal to drinkers of even the best wines from the Graves.

Louis Roederer is one of the largest remaining independent Champagne Houses, owned by the same family since it was founded in 1776, the same year that the USA was officially founded. The house is famous for making 'Cristal' - the highly demanded Super Cuvée - but the Brut Premier is their classic, non vintage blend and represents excellent quality in the slightly fuller, creamier style.

Nicolas Rossignol was born in Beaune on 26 July 1974. He is the fifth generation of the Rossignol family born in Volnay. On his maternal side, his grandmother was from Pernand Vergelesses and his mother is from Pommard.
