The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is earthy upon first tilt of the glass, mixing flowery underbrush and worn leather. Yet it slowly unwinds with time, adding depths of dried black cherry, plum and sage. This is seamlessly silky and serene, displaying remarkable balance as a wave of ripe fruits and sweet spice flow across the palate with ease, giving way to a tug of grippy tannins toward the close. A bump of residual acidity maintains marvelous freshness as the 2010 tapers off long, structured and spicy with a hint of sous-bois. As pleasurable as this is today, the 2010 is still maturing in bottle, displaying a primary concentration that will carry it for decades—bravo. Drinking range: 2026 - 2048 Rating: 95 Eric Guido, www.vinous.com (Nov 2023)
Incense, sandalwood, menthol and ripe berry are just some of the aromas that take shape on the gorgeous 2010 Riserva from Fuligni. It has great energy and depth, delivering ripe raspberry, blood orange, licorice, baking spice and a note recalling almond liqueur alongside taut, polished tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced and bright. This still has years to go. An absolute stunner. Drinking range: 2024 - 2035 Rating: 97 Kerin O'Keefe, kerinokeefe.com (Aug 2023)
The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a wine that shows immense harmony and inner poise. The powerful vintage is elegantly tempered in this expression thanks to the flowing and musical nature of the aromatic presentation. The bouquet opens to a steady pace with small berry nuances followed by spice, tobacco, pressed rose and moist earth. Dig deep and there is a bit of white truffle in there as well. The wine boasts a silky texture with a lean, tonic feel that excels in terms of length and persistence. It never feels too heavy or flat. In fact, the wine is brimming with inner energy and vitality. Drinking range: 2017 - 2030 Rating: 96 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Mar 2016)
Tasted blind. Heavy bottle! Dark ruby with bright orange rim. Compact, firm nose and concentrated, elegant palate that still holds back. Quite precise, succulent finish that oozes style. Drinking range: 2018 - 2034 Rating: 17.5 Walter Speller, www.jancisrobinson.com (Jan 2016)
Wonderful aromas of dried mushrooms, flowers, plums, nuts and cedar. Complex. Full body, firm and silky tannins and a long, flavorful finish. I love the finish. Such elegance. Racy and very long. Superb. What a wine. Drink or hold. No 33 in JS's 'Top 100 Wines of the Year 2016'. Rating: 99 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Oct 2015)
Fuligni's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is deep, dense and powerful, with plenty of voluptuousness and inner sweetness for the year. Leather, menthol, spice, violet and licorice wrap around a core of intense, dark-fleshed fruit. The 2010 needs a few years to fully come together, but it is impressive, even today. Mocha, black cherry, plum and mentholated nuances are woven into the persistent, juicy finish. The 2010 spent three plus years in cask. Drinking range: 2020 - 2035 Rating: 95 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2015)
Fuligni
Founded in 1923 by Giovanni Fuligni, the estate today is co-owned by Robert Guerrini Fuligni and his delightful aunt Maria Flora Fuligni. Roberto works closely with his strong team of Simone Bacconi as agronomist and Daniele Zeffirini as winemaker, with additional technical advice from Federico Ricci in the vineyards, and oenologist father and son Paolo and Jacopo Vagaggini. These are all kept under control by Daniela Perino, who runs the office and commercial side.
The estate covers 100 hectares, of which 14 are under vine, almost all planted with Sangiovese, with a small amount of Merlot for the IGT blend. Most of the land is in a strip on the eastern side of Montalcino, the classic and historical area for the production of Brunello, in localitá Cottimelli. What is important is the combined height of the vineyards (350-440m), the density of planting, age of the vines (14-40) and the 'galestro' soils on which they are planted. Fuligni's wines have reached international recognition for their purity of expression, strong backbone of acidity and polished tannins.
These are simply the finest wines of Brunello, epitomising all that is great from the region. The 'Rosso' now comes from a defined part of the vineyard, on clay and tufa rather than the marl of the Brunello. It is made from the outset as a Rosso, with different clones and the intention to make a wine which will be approachable at a much younger age.
L&S's relationship with Roberto goes back to the mid-nineties. We have always loved the wines here, which combine the concentration and elegance of the best of Brunello. They can be drunk more or less from release, and are so perfectly balanced that they age beautifully. The 'Riserva' releases, made only in the best years, can reward cellaring for decades.
