CHÂTEAU RIEUSSEC

2010 1er Cru Classé Sauternes

IN STOCK
Origin France, Bordeaux
Village Sauternes
Classification 1er Cru Classé
ABV 13%

Perfect drinking this Christmas as it was last - when mentioned by Neil Bennett in the London daily, City AM - 'This year I’m recommending a 2010 Chateau Rieussec. Rieussec sits right next door to the fabled Chateau d’Yquem and benefits from all the Rothschild’s wine-making knowledge. This is not a great price to pay for a tremendous wine, particularly when you consider they pick these precious grapes, shrunken from the intensifying effects of the noble rot, using tweezers. These days it’s not easy to find a wine merchant with a decent selection of sweet wines so I’m glad that L&S is keeping standards up, with a good range of houses and vintages.' L&S (Dec 2018)

*Case price discount: Mix any 12 bottles of wine (or 9 litre equivalent) or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits, Sweet Wine or Fortified (4.5 litres) to get the discounted 'case price' for each bottle.

The 2010 Rieussec is slightly more backwards on the nose. It is very focused with almond, saffron, orange pith and dried honey aromas that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a harmonious entry. Impressive depth with lovely vanillary new oak, it is long and pure towards the finish. A Sauternes with pedigree. Superb. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal. Drinking range: 2023 - 2045 Rating: 96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2020)

Scented and very vibrant with a real unctuousness that recalls Climens. Very sweet but with interesting layers of flavour. Intriguing wine! Lots of to chew on. Real grip. Drinking range: 2022 - 2050 Rating: 18.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2014)

The nose is full of crystallized fruit sweet and rich yet with an underlying freshness. Fleshy apricot and white peach give a sensuous richness on the mid palate with behind lime and grapefruit refreshing and lifting the flavours. 2020-45 Rating: 93-97 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk

Château Rieussec

Sauternes Premier Cru 1855 For several generations, Château Rieussec has been a leading name in Sauternes wines. As early as 1868, Charles Cocks remarked that “Beyond any of the others, Rieussec produces wines that are very similar to Yquem wines”. The modern history of Rieussec, and the beginning of a remarkable rennaissance, starts with the purchase of the estate by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in 1984. A new winery was completed in 1989 and yields restricted to maximise quality. There are 92ha of vineyard, planted with 90% Semillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle. Fermentation takes place in barrels from DBR's own cooperage. Aging is 18 to 26 months depending on the year, including 55% in new barrels.
