BOLGHERI ROSSO

2011 Le Macchiole

Grapes Cab Franc, Merlot, Syrah
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
ABV 12%

50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, 20% Syrah. A bargain introduction to one of Bolgheri's greatest estates. Le Macchiole's 'Bolgheri Rosso' has what can seem a bizarrely Italian character given the 'French' varieties. Some who do not realise how short is the history of wines from the Maremma decry the use of these varieties here, but Le Macchiole keep one row of Sangiovese just to show it does not thrive in this maritime climate which has more in common with Bordeaux than Brunello. Cherry fruit character, fresh acidity and fine tannins together giving a wine with fine aromas and excellent crisp structure. Although there is no lack of weight and sweet fruit concentration, this is a wine which is a super fresh style which is crunchily drinkable. L&S (Jun 2014)

A pretty red, boasting black cherry, black currant, violet and mineral aromas and flavours. Supple and silky, with hints of herbs and spices. Though dense the tannins are well-covered by sweet fruit and flesh, but provide ample support. Excellent length. Best from 2015 through 2025. 21st in the Wine Spectator's top 100 of 2013. Rating: 93 The Wine Spectator, www.winespectator.com (Feb 2014)

The 2011 Bolgheri Rosso bursts from the glass with juicy black cherries, licorice and cinnamon. This racy, exuberant red is a great introduction to the wines of Le Macchiole. In 2011 the blend is 50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 20% Syrah, fermented in steel and aged in neutral oak. 2013-2019 Rating: 89 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Oct 2013)

Le Macchiole

Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. In the heart of Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole.

All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
