CHÂTEAU CALON SÉGUR

2011 3ème Cru Classé Saint Estèphe

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Estèphe
Classification 3ème Cru Classé
ABV 14%

78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot. Like the Capbern Gasqueton much of the Merlot was left out to keep the stylistic finesse. Calon has been better and better in recent vintages, and the thanks must go to Vincent Millet who seems to have a very tight grip on what goes on here. As he said, he knew before the harvest exactly which parcels would make the Grand Vin. Subtle nose, calmly and sweetly rounder than the Capbern. Rounder on the entry too, with good volume and a warmth of fruit which borders on opulence. Very fine texture throughout. Lovely balance of tannins and ripe, delicately-expressed fruit. Rating: 93 L&S (Apr 2012)

The 2011 Calon-Ségur has a light, tertiary bouquet, quite tight at first, hints of dried blood coming through with time, a little toasty in style. This gains complexity and is quite appealing. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine grain tannins, a keen line of acidity with one of the more refined finished in its peer group. This is well-crafted and certainly à point. Very fine. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting. Drinking range: 2022 - 2038 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2022)

Bright, deep ruby. Expressive aromas of blackcurrant, tobacco, licorice and spices are complicated by a note of torrefaction. Tight, juicy and intense, showing a floral blackcurrant flavor but little in the way of flesh today. Finishes pure and long. This minerally, floral wine is in need of at least four or five years of bottle aging, but I like its precision and purity Rating: 90 Ian d'Agata - Stephen Tanzer website (Jul 2014)
