Tasted en primeur it showed purity and precision. Thick weight of fruit with a subtle sweetness and real drive. Cassis, even a bright fresh raspberry top-note. Fine tannins with a little spicy sweetness too. Tasted recently it is beginning to open up nicely with a sweet and easy start, but still a firmish finish - proper claret for this sort of price. Rating: 90 L&S (Apr 2012)

The nose is fresh with a nice mix of black fruits. There is more weight on the palate the fruits feeling ripe a mix of flavours giving complexity. Bramble and bilberry come through towards the back lightening and refreshing the finish. 2018-30 Rating: 84-89 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (Dec 2013)
Two samples both very different. The best was quite fluffy and lifted on the nose with copious ripe red fruits suggesting a lot of pumping over. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy, slightly furry tannins but good depth and a fleshy, rounded finish that gives a nod to 2009. Rating: 86-88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2012)
Good depth of Cabernet fruit a well made wine. Drink 2015-2020. Rating: 16 www.decanter.com (Apr 2012)
Château Cambon la Pelouse
One of the longest-standing producers with exports to England dating back to the end of the 17th Century, the 38 hectare Château Cambon La Pelouse contributed substantially in the past to building the reputation in France and abroad of Médoc wines. The 35 hectare estate is on the outskirts of Macau and counts the Margaux estates of Giscours and Cantemerle as neighbours. With an average annual production of 250,000 bottles, the estate is planted 52% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot to a vine density of 7,000 vines per hectare with an average age of 30 years for the vines. The terroir is composed of sandy gravels which provides effective drainage. This ensures a consistent production of elegant medium-bodied wines which have been praised by Robert Parker as “one of my favorite estates from the southern part of the Medoc”.
