Not the same freshness on the nose (as the Clos de L'Oratoire) but the palate is classy, closed for the moment but there's a bit of mineral, of drive, density and purity. There's some very good old-vine Cabernet Franc here. Rating: 92 L&S (Apr 2012)

From the flagship estate of visionary Stephan von Neipperg, I noticed some sample variations on the four occasions I had this wine. Cropped at 33 hectoliters per hectare with a final blend of 60% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Franc and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is generally a fruit-forward style of wine with an exotic, perfumed personality. The 2011 reveals a soft, sexy style with lots of Christmas fruitcake notes intermixed with cedarwood, spice box, black currants and kirsch. Fleshy and fat with impressive purity, texture and length, it can be enjoyed over the next 10-14 years. 2012 - 2026 Rating: 90-92 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Apr 2012)

The Canon-la-Gaffeliere has a surprisingly closed bouquet compared to the Clos de l’Oratoire with faint red berry and fish scale aromas. The palate is more in the mould of Canon-la-Gaffeliere with plush tannins and velvety mouthfeel, although it is missing some weight at the back end at the moment. Perhaps this will be filled is during maturation? We will see. Rating: 89-91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2012)

A really exotic, deep and concentrated fruit style here, all black cherry but with a really pure lift to it rather than anything over the top. Dark and slightly savoury, but so bright. A really appealing creamed fruit character to the palate, the structure elegant and very integrated, fresh and very harmonious. On returning to it the tannins really start to show, the substance velvety but firm. The acidity is good and the fruit is not over-worked. Château Canon La Gaffelière

Château Canon La Gaffelière started out life with two seperate names. It was known as Canon Boitard and La Gaffelière-Boitard in the 19th century. Skipping ahead to modern history, in 1969, Count Joseph-Hubert von Neipperg purchased the Bordeaux wine estate in 1971. The von Neipperg family remain the owners today. Stephan von Neipperg manages the property as well as several other St. Emilion estates owned by the family. The Bordeaux wine property is located south of the St. Emilion village. It’s not far from La Gaffeliere. The terroir is sand and clay. The sandy topsoil adds more sand when you travel further from the slopes. The slope soil has a large concentration of clay. There is also a thick vein of clay in the subsoil, at a depth of between 70 and 150 cm.
