Big, quite beefy wine for a Margaux, as usual with the high proportion of Cabernet. Chunky mouthful, rich, nicely balanced and elegant, flowing and vital, real wine. Rating: 91 L&S (Apr 2012)

Moderately saturated bright ruby. Pure aromas of blueberry, flowers and licorice. Fresh and suave, with straightforward red berry and cedar flavors lifted by a juicy herbal quality. Finishes with modest length, dusty tannins and a slightly medicinal quality. Does this have the stuffing to develop additional nuance with bottle age? Rating: 87 Ian d'Agata, www.vinousmedia.com (Jul 2014)
A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc and aged in 35% new oak, the Ferriere has a very pure bouquet that is so elegant and refined. The palate is very well balanced with a pleasant fleshy entry. It has an effervescent red fruit profile with hints of orange zest towards the bright, perky finish. I hope it is as delicious as this after bottling. Rating: 90-92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2012)
Deep cherry crimson. Sweet oak spice. Some vanilla but the clean dark and cherry fruit seeps round the edges. Firm, dry but rounded and well balanced by freshness. Cool and clear and well directed and more to come even though it is not a big wine. 2017-2028 Rating: 16.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2012)
Château Ferrière
Margaux Troisième cru 1855 The Ferrière family owned their eponymous estate from its origins in the 18th Century right up until 1914. During the 20th Century, Château Ferrière's star fell considerably with the vineyard leased to Alexis Lichine and the wine made at Château Lascombes, and Château Ferrière was rarely seen or known outside France. Ferrière was purchased by the Taillan Group (who own, among others, Gruaud-Larose and Chasse-Spleen) in 1988, and the story since then has been of continued improvement. The connection with Château Lascombes was ended and all wines are made at Château Ferrière now. Château Ferrière is the smallest of the Cru Classé estates, with just 8ha of vines dispersed around the centre of Margaux village. 80% are Cabernet Sauvignon, with 15% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. The Grand Vin spends 18 months in wood (60% new). Both in terms of quality and availability, Château Ferrière is unrecognisable from where it was a few short years ago. Classic, gently assertive Margaux and excellent value for money.
