Good wholesome aromatic fruit. Delicacy and precision, red fruit with high-toned red currant, then a bit more depth. There's really a very attractive richness here. A little spice. Goes on well. Rating: 91 L&S (Apr 2012)

Fresh acidities, mint, mandarin peel, fresh earth, delicious brambled autumnal fruit, as it opens a gourmet edge of black truffle and gouda cheese emerge, with bitter black chocolate notes and pencil lead. 40% new oak, 45hl/h yield. Harvest September 15 to 29, Remy di Constanzo technical director. Drinking range: 2021 - 2042 Rating: 94 Jane Anson, Decanter (Jan 2023)

Two bottles of the 2011 Gloria were tasted but with different levels of oxidation. Dark berry fruit, a touch of cola on the nose that just lacks a bit of spark. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, a little dry and a bit of green, somewhat chewy on the finish. Gloria is much better nowadays. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting. Rating: 86 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2022)

Rather inexpressive nose hints at violet and blackberry. Similarly closed and tight on the palate, hinting at moderately intense black fruit and mineral flavors. Finishes with youthfully chewy tannins and average length. I usually find Gloria to be one of the best buys in Bordeaux, but this young 2011 is disappointing. Hopefully, it will improve with time and my score will eventually look ungenerous. Rating: 85-88 Ian d'Agata, www.vinousmedia.com (May 2012)

Château Gloria

Château Gloria is an unclassified St-Julien property that produces clarets that equal in quality those from the more prestigious classed growths. Henri Martin, a cooper by upbringing, took over the property in 1942 and began purchasing plots of vineyards from classed growth properties such as Gruaud-Larose, Talbot, Lagrange and Léoville-Barton. By the mid 1960s he had 50 hectares spread across the appellation. In 1982 he purchased Château St-Pierre and thus realised his lifetime ambition of owning a Grand Cru Classé property. Henri Martin died in 1991 and Gloria is now run by his son-in-law Jean-Louis Triaud. The wine is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. It is aged in a combination of large oak foudres and small oak barrels (50% new). Gloria produces a wine that is typically deep in colour and rich, cassis-laden and cedary on the palate. It normally needs 7-10 years of bottle age to show at its best.
