CHÂTEAU L'ÉVANGILE

2011 Pomerol Château L'Évangile

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol
Village Pomerol
ABV 14%

94% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc. 73% first wine, 13.6% Alc., 100% new wood but amazingly it is barely noticeable. Hugely aromatic, floral fruity nose. Wonderfully incisive and energetic, very bright and with a pebbly smooth hard definition. Really stood out in our tastings as being on a different register, almost from a different vintage. As with all Pomerols the berries were tiny because of the drought. The rain in August was a definite help because it enabled the vines to finish ripening the grapes. They picked a little bit as early as the 6th September, but the main crop was picked between the 13th and the 21st. Rating: 95 L&S (Apr 2012)

The 2011 l'Evangile has a rather sweaty bouquet at first, maybe just a little forced in the winery? Menthol scents emerge with time. The palate is spicy on the entry, a little richer in style than its peers, good body and depth with a savory, white pepper and clove finish. Peaking now, though it will give several years more drinking pleasure. A second bottle poured is much better. Cleaner and more focused on the nose, earthy red fruit mixes with hoisin and truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh and focused with a delineated finish, this is one of the few to offer a touch of mineralité. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting. Drinking range: 2022 - 2032 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2022)

Bright, deep purple-ruby. Brooding nose offers rich blackcurrant and black cherry scents complicated by sexy oak, violet and minerals. At once pure, dense and silky, offering complex, fresh flavors of dark plum, spicy blackcurrant, vanilla, coffee and liquid minerals. Finishes sweet and extremely long, with seamless ripe tannins. Typically graceful and precise L'Evangile with sneaky power. Rating: 92 Ian d'Agata, www.vinousmedia.com (Jul 2014)

The grand vin, the 2011 l’Evangile exhibits a dark ruby color with purple nuances as well as noticeable acidity, a streamlined, crisp, elegant, mid-weight style, red and black fruits, light tannin and a fresh, vibrant mouthfeel. It is a blend of 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. 2015-2025. By the way, this 55-acre estate is now slightly larger than when the Rothschilds first acquired it as they have purchased 15 acres from La Croix de Gay. Drinking range: 2015 - 2025 Rating: 88-90 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Apr 2012)

Château L'Évangile

Sandwiched between Château Petrus to the north and Château Cheval Blanc to the south are the vineyards of Château l’Evangile. In the latter part of the 19th Century l’Evangile’s wines were rated as second only to Petrus, reflecting the glory of its illustrious neighbours.

Château l’Evangile’s origins lay in an estate called Domaine de Mautretat that was broken up in the early years of the 18th Century with a Mme Conseillan taking one part (that went on to be next-door neighbours Château Conseillante) with a reverend gentleman called M. Léglise purchasing the other, to be called Château Fazilleau until renamed l’Evangile – the Gospel – in the late 19th Century, presumably in keeping with having St Peter (Petrus) next door.

Today Château l’Evangile is owned by Domaines Baron de Rothschild (Lafite), they having purchased the estate in 1990 from the Ducasse family one of whose forebears, Paul Chaperon, had built the château in 1874. DBR have injected a whole new level of investment and improvement to once again raise l’Evangile to the very top echelon of Pomerol. The 22ha of vineyard and planted for the most part on an usual gravel band that runs through the more usual clay soil. They are planted with 79% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are aged in barrel for between 12 and 24 months, although in more recent vintages they, like many producers in France, have also used larger oak foudres, amphorae and concrete vats alongside the traditional barriques bordelaises of 225 l.
