CHÂTEAU POTENSAC

2011 Cru Bourgeois Médoc

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Médoc
Classification Cru Bourgeois
ABV 13.5%

34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 52% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc. Tight cassis elegance. Dry firm volume. Tannin more than fruit on the finish, even if the very end has tight cherry skins. Will always be a firm style I think. Rating: 89 L&S (Apr 2012)

A sleeper of the vintage, this blend of 52% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Cabernet Franc exhibits outstanding ripeness (13.5% alcohol) as well as a deep ruby/purple color and excellent notes of crushed rocks, red and black currants, licorice and earth. Supple-textured, medium-bodied and nicely concentrated, it should provide pleasure over the next 7-10 years. 2012 - 2022 Rating: 87-89 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Apr 2012)

The Potensac is a blend of 52% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Cabernet Franc cropped at 48hl/ha. It has a light cedar-driven bouquet where despite the predominance of Merlot, the Cabernet is the defining feature with attractive tertiary/sous-bois scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a stony entry, quite terse and linear, perhaps strict with no frills. Crisp blackberry and briary towards the finish with a sense of clinical abruptness. Rating: 87-89 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2012)

The blend is Merlot 52% (up a little), Cabernet Sauvignon 34% and Cabernet Franc 14% (both down a little) with no Petit Verdot this year. Alcohol 13.5%, acidity 3.75 g/l, IPT 74. Rather a reserved character on the nose, not extremely open or expressive, with a similarly soft character on the palate akin to that presented by the second wine just tasted. It feels diffuse, with a simple fruit character, with decent if rather firm tannins behind it all. A touch foursquare. And a soft, chewy finish. Rating: 13-14 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2012)

Château Potensac

Château Potensac is owned by the Delon family, owners of Léoville-Las Cases and Nénin. Potensac belies its humble Cru Bourgeois status and regularly outperforms its more illustrious neighbours.

The vineyards of Potensac are located in Ordonnac in Médoc. The blend is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, with approximately 40% Merlot and Cabernet Franc combined.

Yields are severely restricted to around 35 hl/ha (hectolitres per hectare) and rigorous selection for the 'grand vin' consigns roughly 35% of the harvest to the second wine, named Château Lassalle. Michel and Jean-Hubert Delon do not filter their wines as they prefer the more caring approach of fining with egg whites.
