CHÂTEAU SUDUIRAUT

2011 1er Cru Classé Sauternes

Origin France, Bordeaux
District Left Bank
Sub-district Sauternes-Barsac
Village Sauternes
Classification 1er Cru Classé
ABV 13%

For me this was the one of the 1er Cru Classé big names (Yquem apart) which seemed to be a complete wine. Very rich and waxy, and a very solid, full style on the palate. Richly honeyed, really quite a monster of sweetness (a record 150g/l), but could still do with a little more definition. Like most estates this year there was no need for the great number of pickings that are normally required - the first tri was in early September, but was not a great success, more a question of cleaning out the vineyard, and high in acetic acid. Then there was a widespread and even development of botrytis and the majority of the harvest was brought in in one picking. The little that was left was picked in early October, and it was this that brought the welcome acidity. Rating: 93 L&S (Apr 2012)

Characterized by notes of volatile acidity, the 2011 Suduiraut reveals aromas of quince, dry apricots and spices with air and time in the glass. Medium-bodied, round, and enveloping with a sweet core of fruit, it’s fresh despite its heavy finish. Crafted from a challenging vintage, this blend of 93% Sémillon and 7% Sauvignon Blanc was matured for 20 months in 45% new oak barrels and the rest one-year-old barrels and contains 148 grams per liter of residual sugar. Harvested in three tries from September 12 to October 5, it is fully mature and offers straightforward enjoyment today. Drinking range: 2024 - 2034 Rating: 92 Yohan Castaing, www.robertparker.com (Jun 2024)

The 2011 Suduiraut feels a little oaky on the nose and does not have the same bandwidth as the finest Sauternes this vintage. The palate is well balanced with a lovely viscous texture, very harmonious with pure honey and quince towards the finish. Yet I do still feel the sway of the barrel here. A fine Suduiraut, but not within the top rank. Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting. Drinking range: 2022 - 2036 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2022)

Bright yellow-gold. Knockout nose offers poached pear, honeyed mango, guava, baking spices and saffron, complicated by very pure, smoky, marmalady botrytis. Sweet, dense and very rich, boasting a compelling creamy texture and outstanding depth to its guava and mandarin orange flavors. Lively, harmonious acidity gives the middle palate a laser-like precision. Finishes bright and long, with lingering notes of baked apple and pear. An outstanding Suduiraut. Rating: 95 Ian d'Agata, www.vinousmedia.com (Jul 2014)

Château Suduiraut

Sauternes Premier Cru 1855 The de Suduiraut family lived on their estate in Preignac at least as far back as 1580. In the later years of the 17th Century, a dispute with the local Governor led to the château being flattened. In response, Comte Blaise de Suduiraut rebuilt in lavish manner, with gardens laid out by King Louis XIV's designer. Since the de Suduiraut's time there have been many owners, but today it is in the very capable hands of AXA Millésimes. The 92ha of vineyard are planted with 90% Semillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. There is a second wine, which takes its name from a neighbouring estate that was absorbed into Suduiraut in 1831, and is called Castelnau de Suduiraut.
