BOLGHERI ROSSO

2013 Le Macchiole

Grapes Merlot, Cab Franc, Syrah
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
ABV 14.5%

Le Macchiole's Bolgheri Rosso is a great introduction to the style of the estate. It combines a lush ripeness with a perfectly-pitched purity and bright acidity which keep the fullness lively and dancing. Composed of a blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah, it has much of the richness fruit and some of the spice and tobacco notes of the grander wines. L&S (Feb 2015)

Sleek and elegant, with concentrated flavors of black cherry, black currant, cedar and vanilla. A wild, aromatic underbrush character lingers on the beefy finish. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Drinking range: 2018 - 2024 Rating: 91 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Aug 2016)

Le Macchiole's 2013 Bolgheri Rosso is a full-throttle rendition with bursting notes of dark fruit spice, pressed blackberry and dried cherry. The ripeness is very evident and the aromas are presented as cherry preserves and marmalade. Soft tannins and rich extraction characterize the mouthfeel. This Bolgheri Rosso is made from a blend of Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drinking range: 2015 - 2021 Rating: 90 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Oct 2015)

The Merlot-based 2013 Bolgheri Rosso is a gorgeous entry-level red. Round, pliant and generous on the palate, the 2013 offers lovely density and juiciness. Dark cherry, raspberries, flowers, mint and sweet spices meld into the voluptuous finish. The Rosso is aged in a combination of oak and cement. Given its budget-friendly price, Le Macchiole's Bolgheri Rosso is one of the finest Bolgheri wines in its price range. Drinking range: 2016 - 2021 Rating: 91 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Oct 2015)

Le Macchiole

Initially put onto the wine map by Eugenio Campolmi in 1983, the Le Macchiole estate has been run by his wife Cinzia since 2002. In the heart of Bolgheri, with 22 hectares of vineyard over much of the best soils of the region these are, along with the Sassicaia and Ornellaia's vineyards, also among the oldest and most established vines in Bolgheri. Their careful selection of grape varieties and cultivation techniques according to climate and soil has led them to concentrate on Merlot, Syrah and most importantly Cabernet Franc, a variety which can express itself so well in the hands of Le Macchiole.

All of their wines are marked by a unique and unmistakable character. Full bodied wines, and yet with clean and elegant flavours, leading to great freshness and finesse, they are incredibly sought after world-wide. The estate has been organic since 2002, and they are experimenting with biodynamics.
