CHÂTEAU LE DÔME
2013 Saint Emilion
Grapes | Cab Franc, Merlot |
Colour | Red |
Origin | France, Bordeaux |
Sub-district | Saint Emilion & Satellites |
Village | Saint Emilion |
Composed of 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot, this cuvee has one of the highest percentages of Cabernet Franc of any Bordeaux wine. The 2013-s natural alcohol came in at an impressive 12.9%. Sweet notes of forest floor, blueberries and raspberries jump from the glass of this dense ruby/purple-colored St. Emilion. Medium-bodied with ripe, well-integrated tannins, adequate acidity and an attractive plump, sweet, succulent character (atypical for a 2013), this beauty is a brilliantly crafted wine from proprietor Jonathan Maltus. It should drink well for 10-12 years. 2014-2026 Rating: 90-92 Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, www.RobertParker.com (Aug 2014)

(80% merlot, 20% cabernet franc; 3.65 pH; 3.65 total acidity; 12.9% alcohol): Good full red. Aromas of blackcurrant, strawberry, camphor and cocoa are lifted by an exotic spicy violet perfume. Silky-sweet, precise and intense, showing excellent lift to the red fruit and spice flavors. Wonderfully juicy, youthfully imploded wine, finishing with serious but fine-grained tannins and noteworthy length. This isn't the most concentrated Le Dome ever but it's beautifully balanced and precise. Rating: 89-91 Ian d'Agata - Stephen Tanzer website (May 2014)
Cabernet Franc 80% Merlot 20% The nose has an attractive mix of flavours with black fruits to the fore. Rich and sweet in the middle black cherry and plum is enriched by dark chocolate and coffee beans. There is herbal freshness at the back a hint of spicy oak with lots of rich fruit filling out the finish. 2017-28. Rating: 89-93 Derek Smedley MW, www.dereksmedleymw.co.uk (May 2014)
There’s no denying that this is an atypical Le Dôme in terms of alcohol content (12.9%) but the 80/20 split between Cabernet Franc and Merlot is consistent. Fresh, spicy and enticing, this wears its concentration lightly and is none the worse for that. 2018-23 Rating: 93 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (May 2014)
