The perils of Primeurs tastings illustrated: at a négociant's at the beginning of the week, it showed nothing more than creamy vanillin fruit with rather ersatz flavours more of oak than anything else. The fruit might have been in hiding, but it was quite dry too. Later in the week at the Pessac-Léognan tasting, it surprised by its slightness for a wine from this property, but this came over as a positive thing. Nicely composed cake dough sort of flavours, pretty good balance, in fact really not bad even if there was still no real lift to the fruit. Rating: 87-90 L&S (Apr 2014)

Discreet but oaky blackcurrant nose, with considerable polish. Medium-bodied, supple and quite concentrated. Robust tannins, not too dense. Some acidity and spicy oak enliven the finish. Quite long. Drinking range: 2016 - 2024 Rating: 90 Stephen Brook, Decanter.com (Oct 2016)
A strong effort, the 2013 Pape Clement boasts a dark ruby/plum color along with notes of black currants, mulberries, cherries, graphite, and a hint of white chocolate, medium body, more substance, depth and texture than most of its peers, soft, round tannins, and a straightforward finish. Made from a final blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, this wine achieved 13.5% natural alcohol. Deep ruby. Spicy red cherry and dark chocolate aromas, along with strong mineral and pungent herbal notes. Taut and minty, with red cherry and chocolate flavors lifted by zippy acidity. Finishes with dusty tannins, a note of cedar and very good length. Very good focus here, not to mention concentration and poise. Rating: 88-91 Ian d'Agata - Stephen Tanzer website (May 2014)
Château Pape Clement
Pape Clement stakes a good claim to being the oldest vineyard in Bordeaux. On his accession to post of Archbishop of Bordeaux in 1299, Bernard de Groth was gifted the land by his brother and planted a vineyard. Five years later Bernard was elected Pope Clement V, from which title the estate takes its name. Too busy with Papal business, the estate was handed over to the Archbishops of Bordeaux who owned it until the Revolution.
The common malaise of 20th Century wars, depression and general decline saw Pape Clement in the doldrums by the 1970's. However, under the ownership of the Montagne family and the stewardship of Bernard Magrez, Château Pape Clement has become one of the leading estates in Pessac-Léognan.
