CHÂTEAU LALANDE BORIE

2014 Saint Julien

Grapes Cab Sauv, Cab Franc, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Julien
ABV 14%

It's always a treat to visit this glamorous Chateau. The wines too have a sense of glamour and this 'entry level' from Bruno Borie is no exception. A pretty nose, with rose petals and spice is followed by a more weighty, quite full on middle of ripe fruit, dark and glossy and still that spiced edge, black pepper and clove. Glossy and plump shape - attractive, for the short-to-medium term. 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc. Rating: 89 L&S (Apr 2015)

The 2014 Lalande-Borie is an attractive, midweight Saint-Julien from Bruno Borie. Dark blue/purplish fruit, spice, lavender and licorice are all laced into the soft, refreshing finish. This is in a decidedly understated style, relative both to the vintage and to Borie's other 2014s. Tasted two times. Drinking range: 2017 - 2026 Rating: 90 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2017)

The Château Lalande-Borie 2014 is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc that will be matured for 12 months in 30% new oak. It has a slightly high-toned bouquet with small dark cherries and cold stone scents, perhaps not quite as complex as the Fourcas-Borie. The palate is medium-bodied, a little coarse on the entry although there is fine acidity. I find the tannins a little more refined on the Fourcas-Borie this year, though there is a pleasant saline tang on the finish. Perhaps it will merit a more favorable evaluation after bottling. Drinking range: 2018 - 2028 Rating: 87-89 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2015)

Very interesting nose with black pepper and emphatic flowers. Notably perfumed and smooth on the palate. Tannins insist on the end. Just a little inky on the end but gorgeous upfront. Good persistence. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2015)
