CHÂTEAU RIEUSSEC

2014 1er Cru Classé Sauternes

Colour White
Origin France, Bordeaux
Village Sauternes
Classification 1er Cru Classé
ABV 14%

There is so much going on here. Beautiful orange blossom and whiff of soft, warm honey on the nose. The palate is tighter, harder to penetrate but impressive depth and strata of zinging marmalade and cooked apricot. Powerful, intense stuff, quite weighty but the great balance means it just works. Rating: 94 L&S (Apr 2015)

The 2014 Rieussec is comparatively a little muted on the nose and does not possess the amplitude of others in this flight. The palate makes up for the aromatics with a fresh, Aszu-like entry, a fine bead of acidity and stem ginger and lemongrass elements with a persistent, orange rind finish. This is a dependable Sauternes, though it lacks the fireworks of other vintages. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting. Drinking range: 2024 - 2038 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2024)

Intense and lifted, excellent quality, this has clear depth of flavour, bitter orange, marmalade, saffran, white pepper, cirus, truffle and lime zest, all stretching out through the palate. Drinking range: 2024 - 2040 Rating: 96 Jane Anson, Decanter (Feb 2024)

The 2014 Rieussec is rich, creamy and ample. Orange peel, mint, apricot jam and tropical fruits grace the palate in a sensual, rich Sauternes that exudes class. Already showing slightly forward notes in its bouquet, the 2014 will enter its prime drinking window sooner than other recent vintages (the 2013 comes to mind). This is a very pretty and complete Sauternes with all of its elements in the right place. Drinking range: 2017 - 2024 Rating: 94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2017)

Château Rieussec

Sauternes Premier Cru 1855 For several generations, Château Rieussec has been a leading name in Sauternes wines. As early as 1868, Charles Cocks remarked that “Beyond any of the others, Rieussec produces wines that are very similar to Yquem wines”. The modern history of Rieussec, and the beginning of a remarkable rennaissance, starts with the purchase of the estate by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) in 1984. A new winery was completed in 1989 and yields restricted to maximise quality. There are 92ha of vineyard, planted with 90% Semillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Muscadelle. Fermentation takes place in barrels from DBR's own cooperage. Aging is 18 to 26 months depending on the year, including 55% in new barrels.
