The 2014 vintage marks the fourth iteration of Nyetimber's Tillington Vineyard (the previous being '09, '10 & '13), and it was one well worth considering - a possible Jubilee weekend treat!?

The grapes for this cuvée come from a tiny 2ha plot (total area Nyetimber has under vina is 37ha). Pale gold in colour. Notes of honeysuckle & white flowers to start, then ripe citrus, red apple and lemon tart. Very elegant nose. Lovely overall feel on the palate. More of that lemon tart and a bit of brioche. There's great texture and it is expertly balanced. Already very approachable, but should reward a few more years in bottle. Delicious.

Ageing: 48 months on the lees. 18 months on cork before release.

Made predominantly from Pinot Noir, with a small percentage of Chardonnay from the same single vineyard, this is the fourth vintage of Tillington, and I have to say that I have loved each and every release. Like the finest Champagnes, it is impossible to tell from the colour, nose and palate that this wine is already eight years old. It is pale and shimmering, and I wrote ‘very’ three times in my notes before the word ‘good’. The luminosity and tension here are exquisite, and while the flavour is lean, all-pervasive and mesmerising, it is seemingly weightless. The control throughout is fabulous, and the finish is superbly long and prickly – it is set for a very long life ahead of it. I gave this beauty a 19/20 score in my notes, and this means it is one of the finest English Sparklers I have ever tasted.Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Apr 2022)

After an initial whiff of reduction dissipates, there are notes of freshly cut green and red apple and a touch of sea breeze. More air reveals freshly cut red apple flesh. The palate comes in with a kind of rounded energy, with fruity élan that is reminiscent of ripe, red apple. The mousse is fine and creamy, the body is generous yet svelte, and there is a most lovely edge of pith that almost destines this for the table. It is the subtle apple-scented creaminess on the salty, dry finish that is utterly disarming. Impeccable balance. Rating: 94 Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous.com (Jan 2022)

Nyetimber

In 1988, as Lea & Sandeman was founded, the vines were being planted here in West Sussex. Few vineyards in England are better placed to exploit the similarity between the soils of the South Downs and those of the Champagne region in France than Nyetimber in West Sussex. But it took a couple from Chicago - Stuart and Sandy Moss - to bring the dream to life when they bought Nyetimber Manor in 1986. Vineyards followed from 1988 onwards, and the first vintage released was the 1992.

Nyetimber is now owned by Eric Heerema who already owned a vineyard in West Sussex when he bought Nyetimber in 2006 and had identified more land for planting. All were amalgamated into Nyetimber which now comprises some 350 acres, all planted to Chardonnay and the Pinots Noir and Meunier, making it at the time the biggest vineyard in England, and the first to use only these three Champagne varieties

Eric's greatest act was probably the hiring of married couple Cherie Spriggs and Brad Greatrex in 2007, who are both winemakers, with Cherie taking the 'head winemaker' role. The couple, who had tasted a bottle given to them by Cherie's parents and recognised the potential, have, as the Nytimber website puts it 'been integral to building Nyetimber into a sparkling wine producer that rivals the best in the world'.
