80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc, 1 % Cabernet Sauvignon. Without an appointment I chanced a visit here having just visited uncle Jacques at Le Pin. Guillaume Thienpoint is the technical director here at VCC and was kind enough to let me in for a quick chat and tasting. What a treat. This just jumps out of the glass at you. Gorgeous pure and elegant fruit, some herbal notes but packed with violets and blueberry too. Somehow this exudes good breeding and an effortless style. Sophisticated and seriously impressive. L&S (Apr 2015)

The 2014 Vieux Château Certan comes from two bottles, the first out of condition. The second has a potent Cabernet Franc-driven nose, which is no surprise, as it comprises 30% of the blend: bell pepper and black pepper infusing the black fruit. There is almost a Loire-like scent. The palate is medium-bodied with granular tannins, fine acidity and grip with truffle and raspberry. It's earthy with just a touch of dark chocolate on the finish. This Pomerol is surfeit with character and is just about to enter its drinking window. Tasted at the VCC vertical in Etikhove, Belgium. Drinking range: 2025 - 2050 Rating: 94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jul 2024)
Well judged, a more serious Pomerol than many, so subtle and beguiling in its construction, truffles, white pepper, cranberry, smoked earth, violet flowers, attractive floral edge and this is just gorgeous, grilled and wrapped up in caressing VCC tannins, with an intellectual edge, or rather an edge that keeps you engaged and wanting more. Drinking range: 2024 - 2042 Rating: 95 Jane Anson, Decanter (Feb 2024)
The 2014 Vieux-Château Certan has an attractive bouquet with blackberry, clove and truffle aromas, nicely defined though it seems to have closed up a little since I tasted it just after bottling. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a keen thread of acidity. The palate shows the real potential, more than the nose at the moment. There is wondrous linearity and precision and it finishes with haunting grace. At this tasting I marked this lower than I wanted because it just continuously improved in the glass after I announced my score to the group. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drinking range: 2022 - 2050 Rating: 96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2018)
