CHÂTEAU HAUT SIMARD

2015 Grand Cru Saint Emilion

Grapes Cab Franc, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Saint Emilion
Classification Grand Cru

A ten hectare property owned by the Vauthiers, so tasted as usual at Ausone, this really stood out this year. A silky savoury freshness, slightly saline and mineral, with lovely fresh acidity and length. It seems strange that a property with a soil of clay with sand, gravelly and sandy, should make a wine of this class, especially from 8 year old vines, but this may be one to watch. Rating: 90-91 L&S (Apr 2016)

The 2015 Château Haut Simard, from the ten-hectare block in front of Canon-la-Gaffelière planted at 12,000 vines per hectare, is a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. That represents a higher proportion of the latter because of the sheer quality (for example, the 2014 included around 25%). It has a precocious bouquet with cranberry and wild strawberry aromas, almost confit-like, well defined and gaining intensity in the glass. The palate is very smooth and harmonious, the 30% new oak neatly embroidered with an edgy, citrus fresh finish that displays fine tension and depth. This is a great Haut-Simard that will offer up to 20 years of drinking pleasure. Drinking range: 2020 - 2045 Rating: 92-94 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2016)

Very dark purple. Light and appetising. Racy and fine. An athlete of a wine. Drinking range: 2024 - 2034 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2016)

Part of the Ausone stable. 40% Cabernet Franc in the blend from eight-year-old old vines planted at 12,000vines/ha. Fine, fragrant nose. Pure and enticing. Lovely blueberry notes on the palate. Really elegant and long on the finish. Best yet from this estate; delicious. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 90 James Lawther MW, decanter.com (Apr 2016)
