This new find is an absolute humdinger. Brilliant Bordeaux at a very sensible price. From the highest point at the heart of the Côtes de Bourg. This has all the breadth and richness you'd hope for from 2015 - but this deep fruit is so well handled, the good rich, chewy fruit has a super svelte feel. Nicely spiced too after 12 months in barrel the results are superbly harmonious. Beautifully juicy and full of pleasure this is a brilliant Bordeaux. L&S (Mar 2019)

Lea & Sandeman is a treasure trove of not so well-known bottles, and this humble Côtes de Bourg, a hop across the Gironde River from Haut Médoc, is one of them. This dashing, new-in L&S claret, from a good Bordeaux vintage, is all big, beefy, meaty, cedary charm. Buy it!Jane MacQuitty, The Times (Nov 2020)

A superb deep and intense colour, dresses this balanced blend between the Merlot (54%) and the Cabernet Sauvignon. At the first nose, the sixteen months of barrels are felt through a wood brioche-style and grilled, before the aeration reveals aromas of ripe black fruit. The palate is tender, suave and dense, leaning against superb velvety tannins, although still a little fiery in the finish. The future belongs to him. 2 Stars **. Coup de Coeur. Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2019Guide Hachette (Feb 2019)

This wine has an extraordinary perfume with blackberry fruit which is sweet, ripe and juicy and very elevated. The palate is sleek and honed and velvety and then the tannins zoom in and bring tension, length and structure. A classic balance and showing far more extrovert fruit that I would have imagined at this age, this is a very intriguing wine. Château Puybarbe

Château Puybarbe is located in the heart of the Côtes de Bourg appellation, on the right bank of the Gironde just across the water from Margaux. The name comes from the hill called Puy Barbe, the very highest point of the appellation. The height is one of the estates keys to success, allied to the gravel soils that dominate here allowing perfect conditions for the Merlot to thrive (65% of plantings) and ever more juicy Cabernet Suavignon too (35%). The estate now runs to 35 hectares of vineyards. The Orlandi family have been owners since 1952, and we have just heard that they have passed it on to new owners, a Finnish couple, Riku et Anna Väänänen. So far, so good under the new regime and we hope they continue to maximise the potential of this superb plot of prime Côtes de Bourg.
