TAYLOR QUINTA DE VARGELLAS

2015

EN PRIMEUR

Tasted in the line-up of the three Taylor-Fladgate 2015 Vintage Ports, the Taylor was our stand out favourite. It sort of melds the finer bits from both the Croft and the Fonseca. The elegance and lightness of the Croft with beautifully spiced - more floral notes and then some good stuffing here reminding us of the Guimaraens with dark chocolate and deep, roasted damson fruit. Somehow the most sophisticated of the trio Taylor manages to give lovely power - but a refined silky delivery - it is intense but a tad brighter, the long seductive finish leaves you wanting more - this should be fun and one for the cellar.L&S (Jun 2017)

Vargellas (in the Douro Superior) picked early in 2015 and most of the finest wines had been made before mid-September when there were two days of rainfall. No details of the varietal make-up: closed with underlying ripeness on the nose initially, this quickly opened up to reveal its floral fragrance with a touch of dark chocolate and tar; soft plum and berry fruit on the palate with a touch of all-spice and firm, rapier-like tannins on to the finish. Well-balanced wine for the mid-to-long term. Rating: 17 Richard Mayson, www.richardmayson.com  (Sept 2017)

Blackish crimson with medium rim. Heady and ripe on the nose. Subtle and savoury. Satin-smooth palate entry and a very dry end but really exciting and herbal in the middle. Very much in the Taylor's idiom. Neat and ambitious. Drinking range: 2030 - 2050 Rating: 17.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Aug 2017)

This is top class with so much perfume and flower aromas. Violets galore. Full body yet refined and tight with very powerful and polished tannins. This is racy and linear. Turns juicy, fresh and medium sweet. Reminds me of the excellent 1967 Vargellas. Rating: 95 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jun 2017)

The nose has a complex mix of flavours the start of the palate bright with bramble and red fruits. Sweet in the middle a rich mix of black fruits and cocoa depth of flavour but there is balance underlying bramble lighter at the back with rich fruits and depth on the finish.
