CHÂTEAU MOULIN SAINT GEORGES

2016 Grand Cru Saint Emilion

Grapes Cab Franc, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Saint Emilion
Classification Grand Cru
ABV 14%

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Tasted in the line up at Ausone after the Haut Simard, and the nose says this is more serious, suggesting limestone: a more sophisticated, stony density here, the fruit is lifted and floats on this limestone tension. A touch of class. Drinking range: 2025 - 2035 Rating: 90-92 L&S (Apr 2017)

Named after the lieu-dit, the 2016 Château Moulin Saint-Georges is made by the Ausone team, and their 2016 is a brilliant bottle of wine based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Loaded with notions of smoky black fruits, tobacco leaf, cassis, and gravelly, earthy minerality, this beauty is medium to full-bodied, has ripe tannins, impeccable balance, and a blockbuster finish. Give bottles 2-4 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following 15+. Drinking range: 2019 - 2034 Rating: 94 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Feb 2019)

The 2016 Moulin Saint-Georges is a flashy, voluptuous wine. Inky blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and white flowers are all generous in this pliant, fruity Saint-Georges. The balance of fruit and the freshness conferred by some of the north-facing parcels on the property make for a super-expressive, complete wine. The 2016 is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Drink it over the next decade or so. Drinking range: 2018 - 2026 Rating: 91 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Moulin Saint-Georges has a beguiling, pure black cherry and bilberry bouquet that develops subtle pressed iris scents with time. The oak (85% new) is very well integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and vanilla-y red berry fruits that gently grip the palate, leading to an almost candied finish. This feels long and tender, maybe without the grip of its Vauthier stablemate Haut-Simard, but with very good length. Superb. Drinking range: 2022 - 2040 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

Château Moulin Saint Georges

Owned by Alain Vauthier, Château Moulin Saint Georges is situated in Saint-Emilion and covers 7 hectares. The vineyards are well sited on the south-west facing 'Pavie' slope. The average age of the vines on this slope is 26 years old, and they are planted at a density of 6500 vines/hectare. Vauthier believes that the quality of his wine is a direct result of how well the vines are tended to, therefore yields are kept extremely low in order to concentrate the flavour, and all grapes are hand-harvested to ensure only the best grapes are used in production.
