60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot. Ripe, a bit of oak spice and good rich dark fruit, brightly defined, medium weight velvet feel. Tannic grip on the finish retains juice well. Tasted again at Clos Fourtet, showing bright and tight. Mathieu Cuvelier said it was rare to get quite such complete ripeness in the Cabernet Sauvignon, and that he felt this was the most successful vintage they have made since buying Poujeaux in 2008. Drinking range: 2022 - 2030 Rating: 89-90 L&S (Apr 2017)

An outstanding Moulis made with consulting help from Stéphane Derenoncourt, the 2016 Château Poujeaux offers up a rock star, medium to full-bodied, layered profile as well as pretty notes of ripe black fruits, graphite, violets, and background oak. Give this sleeper 2-3 years of bottle age and it will impress for a decade or more. Drinking range: 2022 - 2032 Rating: 90 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Mar 2019)

The 2016 Poujeaux has turned out beautifully. Ripe, generous and deeply layered, the 2016 has so much to offer. A varietal Cabernet Sauvignon note give the dark red/purplish berry fruit an attractive floral/savory upper register that adds striking nuance as well as character. This is a superb vintage for Poujeaux. Drinking range: 2020 - 2031 Rating: 90 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Poujeaux has an impressive bouquet with plenty of blackberry, briary and cigar box aromas that are very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin on the entry. This is a "smoky" Poujeaux with commendable depth and structure, a little more "solid" than recent vintages with good depth on the black pepper-tinged finish. The 2015 Poujeaux was very good, but this may well surpass that and achieve the level of some of the legendary wines from yesteryear. Drinking range: 2022 - 2045 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2017)

Château Poujeaux

Château Poujeaux sits on the Grand Poujeaux, a Gunzian gravel mound of similar constitution to the more illustrious communes of the Haut-Médoc. Alongside Château Chasse-Spleen, Poujeaux is one of the leading estates in Moulis and offers great value to the discerning Haut-Médoc consumer. Moulis sits a little way back from the Gironde, between Saint Julien and Margaux. 16th century records show that the estate was owned by Gaston de L'Isle, then owner of Chateau Latour, although this is some time before wine production began at Poujeaux during the 19th Century. Since 2008 Château Poujeaux has been owned by Philippe Cuvelier, also owner of Saint Emilion estate Clos Fourtet. There are around 100 hectares of vineyard planted with 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.
