68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot. Dark colour. Rich, but in such a calm way. Very ripe, but just perfectly ripe - no overripeness. Extreme sophistication in the winemaking to give such a supple and pure and elegant result. Tannins do build after the creamy middle, and this is a long-haul wine as usual, but the core of concentration certainly promises much in the long term. Drinking range: 2028 - 2050 Rating: 93-95 L&S (Apr 2017)

The 2016 Rauzan-Ségla has an elegant bouquet that needs some coaxing from the glass, eventually revealing red berry fruit, rose petal, chai tea and light bergamot aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannins that lend a silky-smooth texture. This has a fine line of acidity and impressive harmony on the finish. Wonderful. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting. Drinking range: 2022 - 2056 Rating: 96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Aug 2020)
The monumental 2016 Château Rauzan-Ségla is up with the crème de la creme in the vintage and is a brilliant, brilliant wine that readers should snatch up. Based on 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, all raised in 60% new French oak, it’s a powerful, full-bodied Margaux that has thrilling notes of crème de cassis, blueberries, spring flowers, new leather, and obvious minerality as well as a Château Margaux-like sandalwood and exotic floral quality. Deep, beautifully concentrated, and as seamless and elegant as it gets, it needs 4-5 years of bottle age (it’s brilliant even today) and will keep for 30+ years. Bravo! Drinking range: 2023 - 2053 Rating: 98+ Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Mar 2019)
The 2016 Ségla is sexy, racy and inviting, all qualities found in the Grand Vin, but naturally on a smaller scale. Silky tannins and soft, pliant, red-toned fruit all add to the wine's early appeal. There is so much to like in this expressive, open-knit second wine from Rauzan-Ségla. As always, Ségla is sold only in bottle (not en primeur) and offered to the market with a few years of bottle age, when the estate believes the wine is starting to drink well. Ségla is a blend taken mostly from satellite parcels, along with younger vine fruit from the château's core holdings. Drinking range: 2021 - 2031 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)
Château Rauzan-Ségla
Margaux Deuxième cru 1855 During the late 17th Century Pierre Desmezures de Rauzan gradually accumulated a sizable portfolio of vineyard property in Pauillac and Margaux. The Pauillac properties ended up, through his daughter's marriage into the Pichon family, as the two great Pichon châteaux (and a small parcel even ended up as part of Château Latour). The Margaux vineyards continued with the family name until 1792 when the Rauzan estate was split between two daughters, one who married Pierre Louis de Ségla and the other who was married to the Seigneur de Gassies. Both Rauzans were awarded 2nd Growth status in 1855, and for the remainder of the 19th Century Château Rauzan-Ségla was regarded as one of the leading Deuxième cru. Frédéric Cruse bought Rauzan-Ségla in 1903 and had the present château built, although the 54 years of Cruse family ownership saw the estate go into slow decline. Through the 1970's and into the 80's, however, much needed investment and renewal put Château Rauzan-Ségla back on the map. There are just over 50ha of vines spread between Margaux and Cantenac - 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and just 1% Cabernet Franc. The hand-harvested grapes are fremented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel before spending up to 20 months in oak (50%-60% new). For a long time the estate was spelt "Rausan-Ségla" but, in 1994, they reverted to the historical spelling with a "z".
