Just bottled - and already so perfumed and joyous. Lovely, gentle nose. Really pretty, lovely floral lift and then more leafy and a whiff of dried herbs. Palate is deep and intense. Firmish feel - deep, dark fruit - but plum-skin pep too and gorgeous morello cherry bite. Sculpted core of gorgeously firm fruit. Such incredible detail and nuance. and fine lines. Gorgeous tiny fine tannins push all through this and drive it all on. Really superb stuff. When I mention how beautifully elegant this is to Carlo - he simply says ‘Eleganza, eleganza, eleganza!’ Cannot argue with that. L&S (Apr 2018)

Very pale crimson. Strong strawberry fruit nose. Then the grip of very pure-textured grainy Etna. Needs food! Fresh and lively and absolutely gorgeous. Long and reverberant and quintessentially transparent. Drinking range: 2019 - 2029 Rating: 18 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2020)
Excellent complex fruit that bears comparison with the Dom Lignier-Michelot Vieilles Vignes 2013 Morey it was poured alongside. Seriously tangy and chewy. Long. Definitely needs food but this is a really interesting wine. Drinking range: 2019 - 2026 Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Nov 2019)
Carlo Ferrini, one of the best-known consultant winemakers in Italy, puts his reputation on the line to produce this red from just 1ha of old bush vines. Fortunately this, his first vintage here, has all the aromatic delicacy and finesse one could hope for. The attack is lean but stylish, with a robust mid-palate. Intense and linear, it has ample structure and length. Drinking range: 2019 - 2028 Rating: 92 Stephen Brook, Decanter.com (Aug 2019)
Alberelli di Giodo
Megastar winemaker Carlo Ferrini fell in love with the wines of Etna and the island of Sicilly over the course of numerous visits to this beautiful, sun-kissed island. He is a good friend and collaborator of the charming Gianfranco at the Le Casematte winery - this relationship led to his hunt for his own vineyard in the area. Finally the dream is realised - and 2016 marks the first vintage release of the new Alberelli di Giodo wine.
Carlo started this project in 2012, hoovering up some small plots of old (70-90 years old) bush-vine Nerello Mascalese, as and when they have been available, after 5 years Carlo has secured a total of just 1 Hectare of vines. They are all really high up the Etna slopes at nearly 3000m altitude. In fact so high they are out of the DOC Etna - which runs up to about 1100m! The wine is therefore officially a DOC Sicilia - but could not be more Etna in shape, feel and essence. This small-production beauty is only available in tiny quantities and is sure to be an instant classic. New listings don't come much more exciting than this.
