SANDEMAN
2016
This is based on wines from Quinta do Seixo and Quinta di Vau. 10,000 bottles were produced from 40% each of Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional, 10% Tinto Roriz, and 5% each of Tinto Cão and Sousão. As with the mould-breaking 2011 vintage release, winemaker Luis Sottomayor is keen to impart a bit more muscle than has sometimes been the case in recent vintages. The 2016 has very fine tannins, but they have sort of grit about them despite being very fine and not aggressive. These tannins show as quite dry, so the structure is dry too - seeming even dryer than Dow. The density and long-drawn-out shape of the wine is impressive. Black fruit flavours merge with floral top-notes and a dusting of cocoa - the wine feels fine and svelte, and finishes with good acidity which should see it age effortlessly, and it looks as though this has a great future. Rating: 94-95 L&S (May 2018)

Densely packed, with baker’s chocolate up front, followed by muscular blackcurrant, fig and blackberry paste flavors. Shows brambly grip, with flashes of apple wood and Turkish coffee. Drinking range: 2035 - 2055 Rating: 96 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator (Oct 2018)
The 2016 Vintage Porto is a mostly an equal blend of Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, with various others comprising the last 20% of the juice. It comes in with 95 grams of residual sugar. This was in bottle about two months when tasted. Dark in color, with fine and expressive fruit, this shows intensity of flavor more than pure power. The fruit demonstrates nice lift as it opens with air. As with the Offley, this is a very nice success in this vintage, showing me fine fruit and reasonable structure. The concentration is good too, but it's not quite as impressive as the first two components. It is still excellent overall, the most exuberant of the three Sogrape Portos. We'll see how it ages and develops. For the moment, it is worth leaning up. Drinking range: 2026 - 2070 Rating: 93 Mark Squires, robertparker.com (Jul 2018)
Plum, violet and chocolate with a hint of musky grape aromas too. Pashmina smoothness. Utter pleasure to taste – the fruit is just so pristine, yet there is spice and earthiness and even a bit of savoury umami flavour too – mushroom and soy, perhaps. Superb. Drinking range: 2021 - 2046 Rating: 18.5+ Richard Hemming MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2018)
Tasted at the busy BFT: dense, closed and tight knit on the nose, ripe sweet and minty on the palate with fine grained gravelly tannins rising in the mouth leading to a firm, linear finished. Not as big or extractive to my mind as recent Sandeman vintages and the 2016 is already showing balance and finesse. Richard Mayson, www.richardmayson.com (May 2018)
Sandeman
Scotsman George Sandeman set up business in Tom's Coffee House in London in 1790, trading in Ports and Sherries. An agency in Cadiz soon followed, and then a Port Lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia and, by the beginning of the 20th Century, Sandeman Ports and Sherries were to be found all across the world. Seven generations down the line, another George Sandeman can be found at the helm of the House of Sandeman, although the family relinquished ownership in 1980. Sandeman are now owned by Sogrape. Sandeman's most widely admired products are their aged Tawny Ports.
