Carlo Ferrini is one of Italy’s most celebrated wine makers, who has consulted for several of Italy’s finest estates, including San Leonardo, Barone Ricasoli and Fonterutoli. Giodo is his personal project (the name is a combination of his parent’s names, Giovanna and Donatello). He made his first wine in 1979, when he worked at the Consorzio of Chianti Classico and spearheaded the Chianti Classico 2000 project, a scheme aimed to search for better clones of Sangiovese. In 2000, he acquired a 6-hectare estate Brunello vineyard around Montalcino. The Giodo Toscana 2016 is not one of his stellar Brunellos, but an IGT wine made from the 16-year-old vines on the estate and aged for 12 months in 500- and 2,500-litre wooden casks. The wine is deliberately made for younger drinking and the 2016 shows astounding energy and vibrancy, beautiful purity of fruit, a firm core of crushed red berries and cherries, with fine tannins. It’s youthful and joyous, but still utterly elegant.Sarah Kemp, The Wine Conversation (Dec 2020)
Bright healthy red. A suggestion of forest floor on the nose. Round tannins and rather more sumptuous than the 2015. Great energy; great for current drinking! Really excellent; quite as good as some of the Brunellos. GV relative to the Brunello. Drinking range: 2018 - 2025 Rating: 17 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2020)
Crushed berries, orange peel and black cherries. So aromatic. Full-bodied, tight and reserved with tight and chewy tannins, which are so fine and polished. Love the energy in the fruit and acidity. Just a hint of bitterness. So good to drink now, but will age beautifully. Rating: 96 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Sept 2018)
Podere Giodo di Carlo Ferrini
'Eleganza, eleganza, eleganza' is the mantra of the famed oenologist Carlo Ferrini. Since the first vintage in 2009, this estate has fast become something of a cult classic, immediately amongst the established top Montalcino producers.
Carlo's stellar career started with fifteen years researching Sangiovese clones for the Chianti Classico Consorzio and subsequently he has consulted at some of the greatest estates in Italy. In 2009 he finally put down some roots of his own, putting his full effort and expertise, his heart and soul - into his own winery in Montalcino. Named after his parents 'Giovanna and Donatello' - Giodo is small, just 5.5 Hectares - but perfectly formed.
Carlo spent many years looking for the best spot for his own venture. Just south of the town of Montalcino he found the site for Giodo. South-east facing, gentle slopes in small parcels surrounded by forest, perfectly exposed to the morning and early afternoon sun, and looking out towards Monte Amiata. He planted fifteen different clones of Sangiovese, all chosen for their quality of fruit and their low yields, using his earlier experience to select the very best for this site.
The winery itself, it should come as no surprise, is a minimalist work of art and the culmination of Carlo's experience in designing the perfect tool for the job for his clients over the years. It was finished just in time to make the 2019 vintage. The gravity-fed vat room has both stainless steel and concrete vats, and the barrel cellar has a variety of amphorae as well as multiple sizes of barrels.
