CHÂTEAU DE CÉRONS

2018 Graves

Grapes Cab Sauv, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
District Left Bank
Sub-district Graves
ABV 13.5%

Wow. This is just what you'd hope for from this smart address in the little known Cerons appellation of the Graves. Caroline and Xavier have been working hard to raise the profile of their reds here - and they seem to be having great success. The wines have more character, more weight and more complexity every year. Perfectly ripe deep red berries and warm plum flesh aromas are delivered in the silkiest way - the feel is superb. Polished but with definition too. Wonderful cigar box spices and a long indulgent flow make for a slick and sexy Bordeaux that will please all comers. L&S (Apr 2020)

The 2018 Château de Cérons offers straightforward red currant and strawberry scents on a nose that lacks a bit of amplitude. The palate is better, featuring tart red cherries mixed with blackberry on the entry, a fine bead of acidity and a sapid finish. It just lacks a bit of length and depth. Drinking range: 2022 - 2026 Rating: 85 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Cérons is racy and exuberant from the get-go. Super-ripe red cherry fruit, sweet tobacco, mint, iron and dried herbs lend quite a bit of nuance throughout. The finish tapers off just a bit, but otherwise this is nicely done. Drinking range: 2021 - 2028 Rating: 89 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2021)

Château de Cérons

Ever in the shadow of its illustrious neighbours, the small region of Cérons sits just downstream of Barsac and Sauternes. As the name suggests, the major presence here is the Château de Cérons. In keeping with the location, the tradition has been to make sweet wines (and Château de Cérons do, indeed, make a delightful sweetie) but more interesting perhaps are the immaculate red and dry whites. Brimming with class and a polished finesse - the wines are seriously smart and delicious The property is run by Caroline and Xavier Perromat. Caroline worked at Haut Bailly for 15 years alongside Véronique Sanders - they both arrived there in 1998, but now she is working with her husband with his family estate. This is one to watch in the Graves, with brilliant white wine to rival many Crus Classés, and red of superb refinement and delicacy of tannin. They are working towards a fuller feel to the red wines here, year by year. There is also a small volume of Cérons, the tiny appellation for sweet wine which is a bit lighter and dryer than most Sauternes, refined and very elegant. They farm organically, although are not yet official with this - but the property has just received HVE3 (High Environmental Value) certification.
