Apple blossom, crushed pear, melon skin. Floral texture. The finest of bubbles, almost not there, and then they leave an imprint on your tongue long after. Lime sherbet and stones and yet there is softness at the core of this wine.

The 2018 Brut Spécial Club 1er Cru is forward, elegant and very easy to like. Baked apple tart, spice, vanillin, candied lemon peel and tangerine oil all grace this soft, charming Spécial Club. The 2018, a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay, looks like a near and medium-term drinking offering, so I would not push my luck on aging. Dosage is 4-6 grams per liter. 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay. Vinified in small stainless-steel tanks, malo is encouraged. 48 months sur lattes.
Apple mousse. Fresh, crunchy, clean, like a mouthful of apple with some minty popping candy. Bright and energetic. Not as complex as other grower champagnes at this price in this line-up. Although the finish is good, firm, tasting of green hazelnut. Longer than the other Hébrart wines.

Pierre Peter's renowned single vineyard 'Les Chetillons' began life as a Special Club Champagne. It is the highest tier of classification a grower Champagne can achieve, officially referred to as the 'Club de Tresors' - Club of Treasures. Founded in 1971, the process to qualify is laborious. A first tasting is conducted by members every February, to ascertain whether the vintage is worthy of creating a Special Club - a vote which must be unanimous. Following this, a committee of oenologists and wine professionals taste every vin clair blind, disqualifying any which don't meet their exacting standards. Much like the 12 great livery companies, there are 12 founding members of the Club de Tresors who make their best wine - Marc Hebrart being one of them. This is, as the name would indicate, an incredibly special Champagne and 2018 was an otustanding vintage. It is a profound bottle of wine, for such a modest price.L&S (Aug 2024)

Champagne Marc Hébrart

Marc Hébrart started making his own Champagne in 1962, and the domaine is now run by Jean-Paul, who took over in 1997. Jean-Paul tries to add to the family holdings every year, believing that even at current prices it's still a good long-term bet. He's currently running 16 hectares, 8 ha of Pinot in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Chardonnay in Oiry, Avize, Chouilly and Cramant, and more Pinot in Louvois and Aÿ - as well as the Clos le Léon in Dizy: in total 80 parcels in 11 villages.

The vineyards are farmed sustainably, with as little input as possible. Vinification is by parcel to give the widest possible palette when it comes to blending, and or course allowing for single-vineyard releases like the Clos Léon, a rare walled Clos in the village of Dizy. Most of the Champagnes are made in stainless steel, but since 2004 there has been a barrel-fermented cuvée which blends some of his Chardonnays on the Côte de Blancs with some of his best Pinot Noirs to the north of the Marne - 'Rive Droite-Rive Gauche'.
