Great Syrah nose. 'Rhoney' for sure as it jumps out of the glass. A gorgeous fine line of saline savour. Palate is more supple and open. Well-ripened small black berries. Nice lift and flow. Touch of spicy grip on the finish. Gives great pleasure like a super sophisticated, serious Syrah, but with a welcome, faint line of 'blackcurrant pastilles' running through the core. Totally charming and very hard to resist. L&S (Apr 2021)

This makes an immediately deeper impression than the One Block Syrah. Though it is still very much in the cool-climate mould with those first-pick blackberries and a touch of raspberry compote. There’s a savoury minerality and the start of tapenade touches. Delicious detail and depth on the palate. Lithe tannins. Spicy, fresh, multi-layered finish. Quite ‘Old World’ style, if it weren't for that sweet, fleshy fruit at the core. Wears it’s age very lightly indeed – bodes well for the future. Drinking range: 2022 - 2032 Rating: 17+ Oliver Coleman, www.JancisRobinson.com (Nov 2024)

Syrah. Dry-grown at high elevation (300 to 700 m). Organic. Mid to deep crimson. Riper than a northern Rhône but true and I’m sure in a Yarra context this is very impressive. It certainly builds on the finish in a decidedly top French way. It doesn’t taste six plus years old. What has it been doing all this time? Still some tannin in evidence! Interesting … Drinking range: 2023 - 2030 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Oct 2024)

Jayden Ong

Jayden Ong started making wine at his 'One Block' winery in 2010. There is another label for others which are not strictly 'one block' - 'La Maison de Ong'.

In 2015 Jayden and his wife Morgan bought a plot of land and started the Jayden Ong label for wines from their home-grown fruit. As he puts it, "Jayden Ong wines are the wines we grow (100% control on all farming, dry grown, high altitude, organic at a minimum), make & bottle and come from Chestnut Hill (300m asl) and our home vineyard Forest Garden (700m asl)". This is early days for this vineyard, but the first efforts look extremely promising.
