2019 Chateauneuf-du-Pape les Trois Sources A blend of four different terraces on the lower slopes of this north facing estate. 65% Grenache 15% Syrah the balance from Mourvedre, Cinsault, Counoise, Vacarese, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Grenache Blanc, Clairette & Bourblenc with vineyards planted from as early as 1920-1947 and an average age of 75 years. The vineyards here are very much sand dominated, with peebles and red clay too, but it is the sand that lends the finesse and structure. Winemaking without doing a dis service to the talents of Jean-Paul Daumen, is fairly straightforward, in general all fruit is destemmed with a 3 week concrete vinification and daily pump over, some cap punching, all natural yeasts, unfined and unfiltered and a tiny dollop of SO2 at the bottling stage, this is minimal intervention 'natural' winemaking as it can be. 2019 tasting note from tank 'Dark purple in colour, bright and fresh on the nose, redcurrant and cranberry, not singing on the nose but it explodes into life on the palette, raspberry, black cherry, mint, sage, garrigue, black olive and lots of mineral notes too, sweet fruits and immense concentration, certainly not extracted, lovely finesse here, tannins are high but will soften into focus in time, this is a great Chateauneuf in the making and will last 15+ years no problem and can be drinking in 6-8 years' Without doubt the best estate from 2 days of tasting, if it is purity and balance you want in your Chateauneuf, leave all the hot alcohol wines aside and have a look at this under the radar estate, they may not have the following and kudos of the perceived big names, but you can buy with confidence knowing that they certainly belong in the top 5. More cassis, morello cherry, Asian spice, and a beautiful sense of minerality and loamy earth emerge from the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Trois Sources, a full-bodied, concentrated blend of 60% Grenache, 15% each of Cinsault and Syrah, and the balance Mourvèdre. Coming all from the estate’s sandy soils in the northern part of the appellation, this incredibly concentrated, textured wine has perfect balance, building tannins, and a great finish. Give this beauty another 4-5 years in the cellar and drink it over the following two decades or more. Drinking range: 2025 - 2047 Rating: 96+ Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Nov 2021)
Domaine de la Vieille Julienne
Under the guidance of Jean-Paul Daumen, this estate on the very northern borders of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation is now considered to be one of the leading domaines. One of the first estates to convert to biodynamic practises when Jean-Paul took over from his father in 1990, the 22 hectares of vineyards are nearly all north facing, giving relieve from the hot summer days and lending the wines the all-important freshness. Attention to detail is everything here, with some very old plots of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault & Carignan and a wine making style more at home in Burgundy, it is clear to see why it is held in such high regard by journalists, Rhône enthusiasts, sommeliers and restaurateurs around the world.
Trois Sources is from sand-based vineyards on the lower banks of the estate and are the more approachable when young, whilst the Les Hauts Lieux come from the limestone dominated higher vineyards on the northern boundary of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and need more time to come around. In great years a Reserve wine is made in miniscule quantities from ancient Grenache vineyards. Our visit in July to taste the 2019’s justifiably confirmed our excitement to be working with and shipping from Vieille Julienne; these are deeply coloured, pure and aromatic but with incredible freshness - you can buy these confident that they will richly reward patience over the next 8-15 years. They also produce an utterly brilliant Côtes du Rhône called Lieu-dit Clavin, possible the best value Côtes du Rhône in the entire Rhône Valley.
