The Galopine is the top white from Escaravailles and opens with wild flowers, yellow plum, conference pear and chamomile. In the mouth the wine is textured with some complexing oak creaminess, stone fruits once again, scented with delicate white flowers. The acidity is persistent and supports the weight of fruit, allowing the wine to build concentration on the finish. This would be lovely with some early game or meaty fish cooked with herbs. Grape varieties: 40% Roussane, 40% Marsanne and 20% Viognier. Terroir: Municipality of RASTEAU, the vines are located at altitude, between 250 and 300 m. Sloping terroir with stony and very steep clay-limestone soils. Viticulture: The soil is worked in its entirety with respect for the environment and the plant. Vinification: Manual harvest, early in the morning, with sorting of the grapes, destemming then pressing with a pneumatic press and elimination of the last presses. Settling then fermentation at a regulated temperature (18 ° C) in 28 French oak barrels (fine grain). Two to three batonnages during fermentation then the wines are bottled at the beginning of March. Annual production: 5,000 bottles. Tasting Notes: Light yellow color with golden reflections. The nose is on notes of toasted almonds, white flowers and honey. On the palate, harmonious balance between acidity and roundness. A nice white wine for gastronomy. Pairings: Escalope with cream, truffle risotto, pumpkin soup, fish in sauce, goat cheese. Keeping: 3 to 4 years.
A step up, the 2019 Côtes du Rhône La Galopine Blanc has more precision as well as gorgeous notes of caramelized pineapples, toasted bread, orange blossom, and honeysuckle. It's rich and medium to full-bodied, with notable freshness and a great finish. It's a smoking little white that's well worth seeking out. I'd lean toward drinking bottles over the coming year or two, but it should keep longer in cold cellars as well. Drinking range: 2020 - 2023 Rating: 92 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Dec 2020)
Domaine des Escaravailles
Domaines des Escaravailles was established in 1953 by Jean-Louis Ferran and his two sons, Daniel and Jean-Pierre, in the village of Rasteau.
Today it is run by the third generation of the family, Gilles, the son of Daniel. With vineyards on not only the clay, limestone hillsides of Rasteau, but also in Cairanne, Roaix, Villedieu and St Roman de Malegarde. The estate is run organically and everything is done by hand with the wines made in the cellars in the heart of the property in Rasteau.
The estate takes it's name from the Occitan word for the Scarab Beetle, which you will also find adorning the labels of the wines.
