If there was a wine region that is in focus and a region of the moment then St Joseph could lay claim. There are two distinct styles, north & south. The G&J Bott Saint Jospeh Rouge is most definitely the north. 30% whole bunch with 15 months in oak, but you wouldn't know it, all very well balanced & integrated. An explosion of bright red fruits, an abundance of spice and pepper with olive and violets too, very impressive, silky and soft. L&S (May 2022)

Classic darker berry fruits, graphite, ground pepper, and spring flower-like notes emerge from the 2020 Saint Joseph, a medium to full-bodied, pure, incredibly classic Saint Joseph that already offers pleasure. This estate continues to produce outstanding wine, and this can safely be drunk any time over the coming decade or more. Rating: 93 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Mar 2024)
There is no doubt that fruit clarity, flavour cadence, and underlying freshness are emerging themes in all styles of red wines these days. It doesn’t matter whether a wine is light, medium or indeed a heavyweight; the last thing anyone wants is jammy perfume, a sluggish mid-palate and a lumpy, grainy, alcohol-hot finish. I have always been obsessed with wines that show intensity without weight, persistence without power and whose aftertastes roll on for minutes. This is my definition of fine wine. Inevitably, wines with these traits drink well in their youth because they are born with balance, and they then evolve and shapeshift throughout their lives, bringing fascination and unexpected twists and turns of flavour – what more could one ask for? So, it is a great pleasure to introduce you to Domaine Bott. I have written about these wines back in the MoneyWeek Wine Club days, and the recent release of two new Saint-Josephs has sent me into raptures. My headline red is the essence of the Syrah grape. Bright, clean, black-fruit-and-cracked-pepper-stuffed and ever so slightly pagan while maintaining a sense of civility, bounce and resonance on the palate, this is an epic wine.Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Jan 2024)
The 2020 Saint Joseph was 70% destemmed and will spend 15 months in French oak prior to bottling. It's an impressive barrel sample and has a wonderfully pure, elegant style in its peppery herbs, violets, flowers, and assorted berry fruits. It plays in the more elegant, seamless style of the vintage and is just one classy Saint Joseph that will drink well for 10-15 years. A new discovery for me, I was blown away by these releases from Graeme and Julie Bott. The wines are impeccably made across the board and well worth seeking out. Domaine Graeme & Julie Bott
A love story and a bit of good fortune; a love of the Syrah grape that led Graeme to the Rhone and the love of his life Julie, who came together whilst working at the prestigious cellars of Stephane Ogier. Theirs is a back story of adventure and spirit and one of serendipity too.
Our relationship with the pair stretches back some 8 years or so, when we often stopped and shared a beer after the Marché aux vins in Ampuis every January, it was no surprise when they told us they were setting out on their own journey.
The surprise came when they discovered that the house they had purchased in Verin, complete with 0.35 hectare of garden, was within the appellation of Condrieu, between the in-demand Coteau de Chéry and the illustrious Chateau Grillet. Graeme & Julie like to pick early to capture the freshness, and the wines tend be expressive, bright and pure.
