The irony is that historically Carlo Ferrini's best wines are his reds, and many of those are made in Tuscany. However, this talented winemaker now brings us one of the very best white wines from Sicily's Etna. The Alberelli di Giodo 2021 Sicilia Carricante hits that beautiful intersection between citrusy fruit and salty mineral. The wine is balanced and intense and reveals more complexity that you might expect. We should expect even more as it ages and begins to show some of those lovely Riesling-like petroleum aromas in time. Production is limited to about 3,500 bottles. Loads of jasmine and honeysuckle with sliced-pear and apple aromas that follow through to a medium body with wonderful depth and intensity. Great length. No wood. Flinty. Pure. Release in January 2023. Drink now. Rating: 95 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Aug 2022)
White flowers, white pear, and juice-drenched peach, everything here is dense yet light, tiptoeoing through the palate, then scraping through the volcanic slate and graphite. Delicously gentle and then savage by turns. Fermented in steel tanks, then 6 months on its lees, moving into concrete vats before bottling, held back at the property in bottle until release. Unoaked. Drinking range: 2023 - 2028 Rating: 94 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (Aug 2023)
Oenologist Carlo Ferrini's estate, run by his daughter Bianca. On the north side of Etna. Fermented in tank and aged six months in steel and concrete on lees. Herby citrus. Tight, with riper citrus on the palate and a stony edge to the flavour but a roundness to the texture to balance the high acid. It's good but I don't think it warrants the price except for its rarity value – only 3,000 bottles produced from old vines. Persistent. Drinking range: 2023 - 2028 Rating: 17 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2023)
Alberelli di Giodo
Megastar winemaker Carlo Ferrini fell in love with the wines of Etna and the island of Sicilly over the course of numerous visits to this beautiful, sun-kissed island. He is a good friend and collaborator of the charming Gianfranco at the Le Casematte winery - this relationship led to his hunt for his own vineyard in the area. Finally the dream is realised - and 2016 marks the first vintage release of the new Alberelli di Giodo wine.
Carlo started this project in 2012, hoovering up some small plots of old (70-90 years old) bush-vine Nerello Mascalese, as and when they have been available, after 5 years Carlo has secured a total of just 1 Hectare of vines. They are all really high up the Etna slopes at nearly 3000m altitude. In fact so high they are out of the DOC Etna - which runs up to about 1100m! The wine is therefore officially a DOC Sicilia - but could not be more Etna in shape, feel and essence. This small-production beauty is only available in tiny quantities and is sure to be an instant classic. New listings don't come much more exciting than this.
