Rich plum colour and core of fruit, light tannins. Soft and supple, and winemaker Noëmie Durantou has done skilful work over ageing to make the structure fully integrated and charming. 30% new oak, sandy gravel soils. First time for La Chenade to be 100% Merlot, keeping the Cabernet Franc for Les Cruzelles. Drinking range: 2026 - 2040 Rating: 91 Jane Anson, Decanter (Mar 2024)

The 2021 La Chenade is soft, supple and super-expressive right out of the gate. Silky tannins wrap around a core of red cherry fruit, plum, mocha, spice and new leather, with pretty floral and savory top notes that come alive with a bit of time in the glass. La Chenade is all Merlot this year, as the Franc was used for the Cruzelles. Drinking range: 2024 - 2033 Rating: 91 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2024)

The 2021 La Chenade, which does not contain Cabernet Franc this year, has a more complex bouquet than the Saintayme, with touches of blackberry, pine needles and just a whiff of tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannins on the entry, but there is a core of ripe black fruit here laced with white pepper and clove. The finish is cohesive with commendable length. No, this is not the best La Chenade I have ever tasted, but it will give pleasure over the next six to eight years. Drinking range: 2027 - 2036 Rating: 88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2024)

La Chenade

One of the brightest stars of Pomerol is undoubtedly Denis Durantou of the highly acclaimed Château l’Eglise-Clinet. Thankfully this glory is not enough for Denis and he also has a smaller estate in the less esteemed Lalande de Pomerol. Here Denis' skill and experience can produce magnificent wines that are a fraction of the price. The property is Château les Cruzelles, where he makes both Les Cruzelles but also La Chenade, another Lalande-de-Pomerol cuvée from the younger vines. He was even making this with Cruzelles’ grapes before he bought the estate in 2000. We champion this wine every year on primeur as it represents such consistently good value for money. Beautiful Bordeaux wine at an incredibly fair price - a rare gem.
