From Grenache, 60% Anysbos grapes and 40% from another Bot River property called Nabot. 40% whole-bunch fermentation before maturation lasting 10 months in older oak. More assertive in terms of both aroma and flavour than previous vintages and that much better for it. Red berries (cherry and currant) along with rose, fynbos and white pepper on the nose while the palate has pure fruit, zippy acidity and nicely grippy tannins. A vital wine with good structure. In the late 1600s a prosperous farmer, Cornelis van Niekerk and eight others took a stance against the Cape’s corrupt governor by refusing to sell their wine to the dishonest regime. Instead, they sold directly to passing ships at a much fairer price. This landed them in a Mauritian jail where Cornelis eventually passed away - unjustly branded as one of “The 9 Rebellious Vrijboeren”. It is from this family history that young Albert Van Niekerk derives the name of his gorgeously attractive red 'Rebellie'. From 2 beautiful vineyards in Bot River, Albert picks his Grenache Noir fruit at just the right moment to capture the fresh aromatics that are such a hallmark of this stunning wine. Red berry zip and gorgeously fragrant strawberry sap are nicely spiced with dusty white pepper and soft Asian spices. 100% Grenache. 55% whole-bunch fermentation. Aged for 10 months in old oak barrels. Very light crimson. Fresh, red-fruited nose – the strawberry/raspberry character joined by a touch of thyme and pink peppercorns. Crunchy, vibrant and pure on the palate and with the merest touch of tannic grip. Spicy persistence. Very much in the new-wave light-touch Grenache mould – and a strong example of the style. The 2021 Rebellie is pure Grenache bush vines from Bot River, 40% whole bunches, fermented in small open-top vessels and matured in used oak barrels for around ten months. It has an airy style, well-defined with brambly red fruit, quite Pinot Noir in style. The palate is well-balanced with fine delineation, crisp acidity and just the right amount of grip on the white pepper and clove-tinged finish. There’s fine persistence; this is very promising. VNV was born in the heart of the beautiful Overberg in 2019, a perfect setting to pay tribute to Albert's family history. The Van Niekerks have been farming in the area for generations and this new chapter has been started by Albert and Anmar who continue the tradition as a husband and wife winemaking team.

Albert van Niekerk is assistant winemaker to Peter-Allan Finlayson of Crystallum and John Seccombe of Thorne & Daughters, last year he married Anmar, who is the Gabriëlskloof assistant winemaker, and the two now work together in producing wines under this label.
