FELTON ROAD
2022 Calvert Pinot Noir

The 2022 Pinot Noir Calvert is an intriguingly fragrant wine, evoking the medicinal herbs of an Italian aperitivo alongside cherries, fruit cake and festive spices, which continue on the palate. It fills the mouth but does so without any sense of heaviness. The 2022 is a calming, relaxed wine with a tender charm and mouthcoating tannins that provide an assured structure on the finish without being assertive. The 2022 will evolve gracefully but is already a flavourful party in your mouth. Drinking range: 2025 - 2035 Rating: 93 Rebecca Gibb MW - Vinous.com (May 2024)

Sappy herbal raspberry, red cherry and sour cherry fruit with a vivid redcurrant spine of acid. The palate is bright and energetic, sleek yet crunchy tannins give an appetising bite and offset the the fruit. Drinking range: 2025 - 2029 Rating: **** 93 Jane Skilton MW, Inside Burgundy (Dec 2023)
My favourite 2022 Felton Road Pinot is not Block 3 or 5 in 2022, but the deliciously enticing Calvert. Pure, willowy, bright and pricked with lip-smacking acidity, this is a thrilling wine that will bloom slowly, so there is no hurry to unscrew a bottle. In time, this will be an enchanting creation. Rating: 18.5+ Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Nov 2023)
Fantastic clarity and transparency in this wine with fresh strawberries and cherries. So bright. Medium to full body with very fine tannins that are integrated and energetic. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold. Screw cap. Rating: 95 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Oct 2023)
Felton Road
Felton Road and Rippon are undoubtedly the two leading vineyards in Central Otago, both making Pinots that are finely textured with fresh fruit flavours, rather than the 'fruit bombs' that so many others produce. Felton Road has been totally organic and biodynamic across their three Bannockburn vineyards since 2005. They have been certified by Demeter since 2009. After that there are more differences than similarities.
While Rippon, at Wanaka is on schist, Felton Road in Banockburn is on clay and calcareous loess. It is also very much in the rain shadow of the Main Divide. Irrigation is used at Rippon to help establish young vines, but dry farming is possible once the vines get their roots down, while at Felton Road permanent irrigation is required for the entire vineyard.
