Winemaker Jean Smit has produced a delicious dry Riesling from the Habibi Farm vineyard in Elgin, where the ancient Bokkeveld soils are rich in shale and clay. Intense lime fruit on the nose with subtle stony minerality and a wonderful array of floral aromas. The palate exhibits classically fresh Riesling acidity with thirst quenching ripe lemon and lime flavours, all conveyed by a lovely rounded texture. Only 1300 bottles made. L&S (Jul 2024)

Winemaker is Jean Smit of Damascene. From the Habibi Farm vineyard in Elgin. Grown on shale- and clay-rich soils. Fermented in stainless-steel tanks, with five months on the lees and a further 13 months of bottle-ageing before release. Nose of green mountain herbs and flowers and a flinty edge. Focused lime and lime-blossom character. Same cool, herbal/floral palate, with more of that excellent citrus purity held together with incredible freshness. There is real tension on the palate, but a touch of balancing breadth (some residual sugar …?). Still, it tastes bone dry on the sea-breeze and citrus-inflected finish. Mineral, long. Canadian businessman and former owner of Bordeaux’s Chateau Gaby, David Curl married South African born Genevieve Hamilton-Brown which ultimately led them to Elgin where they acquired a farm called Habibi, planted mainly to apples but also including small parcels of Pinot Noir and Shiraz, the resulting wines named after Genevieve’s late mother Moya Meaker, who was crowned Miss South Africa in 1959.
