Following the underperforming 2021 I tasted last year, the perfumed 2022 Vacqueyras is game on. Vivid orange blossoms, forest strawberries, violets, black cherry and a pinch of dried herbs paint an enticing, aromatic picture. Built around firm tannins, the full-bodied 2022 packs plentiful concentration and is clearly built for the long haul - a complex Vacqueyras with secure aging potential. Drinking range: 2027 - 2034 Rating: 91 Nicholas Greinacher - Vinousmedia.com (Oct 2024)
45% Syrah, 41% Grenache Noir and 14% Mourvèdre. Hand-harvested. 55% destemmed grapes. No fining or filtration. Aged 35% in concrete eggs, 65% in used barrels. Cask/tank sample. Tasted blind. Meat and animal notes on the nose. The palate is juicy, with robust yet fine tannins and a tobacco-and-cigar note alongside savoury, olive notes. Needs some time to show itself. (AC) 15% Drinking range: 2024 - 2030 Rating: 16 Alistair Cooper MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Dec 2023)
Dark purple in the glass. This is full-bodied, atypically massive for the vintage. Extremely ripe and extracted, but the alcohol isn't too high. For those looking for a powerful, driving, thunderous style of southern Rhône. It's defiantly tannic too, so give this time. Drinking range: 2027 - 2031 Rating: 91 Matt Walls, Decanter.com (Nov 2023)
Domaine la Bouïssière
Thierry and Gilles Faravel's Domaine la Bouïssière in Gigondas is exceptional in many ways, apart from the personality of Thierry himself, it is the site of the vineyard, high up under the 'Dentelles de Montmirail' which makes the defining difference.
In contrast to the vines being baked on the plains of stones at the foot of the hill, the Bouïssière vines benefit from cooling air at night falling from the high peaks, and the wines retain a freshness and subtle persistence which is very different to the sometimes bludgeoning broadness and alcoholic heat of the wines on the plain.
Gilles and Thierry Faravel employ non-interventionalist practices to make wines as naturally as possible, resulting in wines of immense concentration and depth, with true vibrancy and the capacity to age for ten to fifteen years.
