These gnarly, small bush vines are between 30 and 70 years old. Pretty nose of violets, cherry and raspberry with nice intensity and freshness. Palate has some good richness, lovely flesh, ripely fruity, perky cherries mixed with smashed fresh strawberries, there is great persistence here and fabulous flow, really nice shape and feel. L&S (May 2024)

*Case price discount: Mix any 12 bottles of wine (or 9 litre equivalent) or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits, Sweet Wine or Fortified (4.5 litres) to get the discounted 'case price' for each bottle.

Domaine Chevalier-Métrat

Sylvain et Marie-Noëlle Métrat work their immaculate vineyards traditionally in this beautiful corner of Odénas just on the southern side of the Mont Brouilly. This family farm is on a small scale just 9 hectares now, but done with real passion and much hard work.
When we last visited, Sylvain did not want to waste a moment waiting around for us to arrive, so we found him working away in the vineyards nearest the winery - the best place to wait for us without missing a moment amongst his old bush-vines where there is always something to do!
In an effort to not over extract flavour or tannins Sylvain avoids any pigeage during fermentation instead he gently submerges the cap and creates more of an infusion. This gives delicacy and an elegant complexity to the juice. The wines are the best we have tasted from this part of the world and offer incredible value for gorgeously crafted, serious wines from beautiful old vines. These are pretty, complex and really joyous.

Brilliant Beaujolais

Unfortunately, the word 'Beaujolais' has become all too readily attached to the word 'Nouveau'. There's nothing wrong with a bit of fun, and at its best the old Beaujolly Nouveau is fun with a party hat on. But there is a lot more to Beaujolais than young wines being raced across France in sports cars and fruity red wine with your breakfast.

Those in the know are starting to purr appreciatively over the wines of the Beaujolais crus. These are the villages whose wines are good enough to be elevated above the generic Beaujolais name and have been given their own appellations.

It's all Gamay, so bright crisp fruit is the story of the day, but there's more - there's a silky feel almost occasionally redolent of Pinot Noir and even an ability to improve with a little age. From the subtle delights of Fleurie to the gently peppered Morgon, albeit all on the light side, this is a case that will enhance any wine lovers cellar/wine rack/cupboard under the stairs.
