CHÂTEAU CAMBON LA PELOUSE

2023 Cru Bourgeois Supérieur Haut Médoc

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Classification Cru Bourgeois Supérieur

The first Bordeaux estate to be bought by Treasury Wine Estates, now only produced in much smaller quanties as they used most of the vines in other wines. It's good quality, with cheerful and well balanced red fruits, fresh acidities, easy going. My suggestion is to look to the excellent Lanessan in this vintage, also in the same group. Drinking range: 2026 - 2036 Rating: 88 Jane Anson, www.janeanson.com (May 2024)

A very confident expression on the nose, with smoked blackberries and smouldering toast from the oak on the nose, with a fresh, delicately floral sidekick. The palate is loosely composed at the start, just a touch on the juicy side, the fruit showing more restraint than the aromatics, with fragrant red cherry, bramble, dark chocolate and toast, draped over a good frame of ripe and tightly knit tannins. It keeps a confident texture through the middle and end, supported by those richly knit tannins which persist into the finish. A good result from Cambon la Pelouse, one of the more reliable cru bourgeois properties. Rating: 89-91 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2024)

Château Cambon la Pelouse

One of the longest-standing producers with exports to England dating back to the end of the 17th Century, the 38 hectare Château Cambon La Pelouse contributed substantially in the past to building the reputation in France and abroad of Médoc wines. The 35 hectare estate is on the outskirts of Macau and counts the Margaux estates of Giscours and Cantemerle as neighbours. With an average annual production of 250,000 bottles, the estate is planted 52% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot to a vine density of 7,000 vines per hectare with an average age of 30 years for the vines. The terroir is composed of sandy gravels which provides effective drainage. This ensures a consistent production of elegant medium-bodied wines which have been praised by Robert Parker as “one of my favorite estates from the southern part of the Medoc”.
