The 2023 Canon La Gaffelière is a powerful, dense wine. In recent years Canon La Gaffelière has been on the more perfumed side, but the 2023 moves in a direction of textural intensity. On the other hand, its balance is compelling. Dark red-toned fruit, pomegranate, spice, blood orange, mint and dried herbs open, but only with great reluctance. Tannins are present but also buried by the fruit. Drinking range: 2030 - 2048 Rating: 94-97 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2024)

A blend of 35% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Cabernet Franc, picked September 20th to the 29th, relatively late for the vintage. The yield was 35 hl/ha. There was a touch of mildew here, not too much. Sweet and convincing on the nose, the pure character of the Cabernets coming through, with smoked damson fruits laced with touches of menthol and green peppercorn. This translates into a firmer edge at the start of the palate, with gently polished and sinewy substance, the fruit still showing a little sweetness though, with plenty of acid zip and firm, modestly grained tannins, not to mention plenty of leafy freshness from the Cabernets (particularly in the second sample tasted). Modest in terms of texture, as per the vintage, but with plenty of energy and granular drive, leading to a gripped and acid-washed finish. Tasted twice. The alcohol is around 13%. Rating: 91-93 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2024)

The 2023 Canon la Gaffelière offers up aromas of minty berries, plums, pencil shavings, dried herbs and bay leaf, followed by a medium to full-bodied, bright and crunchy palate underpinned by tangy acids and chalky tannins. It's a blend of 35% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Rating: 90-92 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Apr 2024)

Château Canon La Gaffelière

Château Canon La Gaffelière started out life with two seperate names. It was known as Canon Boitard and La Gaffelière-Boitard in the 19th century. Skipping ahead to modern history, in 1969, Count Joseph-Hubert von Neipperg purchased the Bordeaux wine estate in 1971. The von Neipperg family remain the owners today. Stephan von Neipperg manages the property as well as several other St. Emilion estates owned by the family. The Bordeaux wine property is located south of the St. Emilion village. It’s not far from La Gaffeliere. The terroir is sand and clay. The sandy topsoil adds more sand when you travel further from the slopes. The slope soil has a large concentration of clay. There is also a thick vein of clay in the subsoil, at a depth of between 70 and 150 cm.
