The 2023 Chasse-Spleen is a very pretty, aromatic Moulis. Crushed flowers, sweet red-toned fruit, chalk, mint and white pepper are all nicely lifted in this mid-weight offering Bright acids lend freshness to play off the mid-weight structure. Drinking range: 2027 - 2038 Rating: 89-91 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (May 2024)

The 2023 from Chasse-Spleen opens with a perfumed nose of rose petals, crystalline dark cherry and peony, a rather fresh and finely defined style. It maintains a rather strictly delineated substance at the start of the palate, sinewy and taut with modest texture, supporting a layer of cherry and raspberry fruits, with red rose petals and gravel. Beneath this there is a rich and fairly well-knit frame of tannins. Confidently structured, with an elegant blanket of fruit laid over the top, this shows a little more chutzpah than many of its Moulis peers. One for the cellar, as this is going to benefit from time. Rating: 90-92 Chris Kissack, www.thewinedoctor.com (Apr 2024)

Offering up aromas of minty cassis, dark berries and pencil shavings, the 2023 Chasse-Spleen is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and youthfully structured, with good depth at the core and a penetrating finish. It's a strong effort. Rating: 89-91 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Apr 2024)

Château Chasse Spleen

Remarkable Chasse-Spleen has always produced high quality wines, which, for the last thirty years, have been worthy of a Third Growth Grand Cru. The English translation of the name of this Cru Bourgeois property is ‘chasing the blues away’, making it one of the most poetic of all names in the Médoc. Owned by Claire Villars, Chasse-Spleen is the leading estate of the little known Moulis appellation, and the wines are of excellent quality. Taking a look around the property (and if you are lucky, being guided round by Jean Pierre Foubet, Claire’s highly entertaining husband) gives you a good idea why they are so well admired. A large estate, although not all plots are next to the château itself; the cellars are impeccably clean, and there is a beautiful tasting room overlooking the barrel cellar and vines.
